Das Problem der politischen Legitimität wurde in der Philosophie des 17. und des beginnenden 18. Jahrhunderts überwiegend als Frage nach der gültigen und allgemeinverbindlichen Begründung von Normen verhandelt. Grundlegend waren dabei Naturrechtsvorstellungen, die sich in einem komplizierten Prozeß und daher erst relativ spät von der dominierenden Begründungskompetenz der Theologie emanzipieren konnten. Die Studie will sich diesem Prozeß annähern, indem sie einen dreistufigen Diskussionszusammenhang rekonstruiert, der für das ausgehende 17. Jahrhundert charakteristisch ist: Während es zunächst um die kritische Würdigung von dezidiert theologischen Legitimationsmustern (Veit Ludwig von Seckendorff, Valentin Alberti) geht, wird in einem zweiten Schritt deren Überwindung durch eine säkularisierte Rechtstheorie vorgeführt (Hugo Grotius, Samuel Pufendorf). Dabei wird dem für die deutsche Diskussion einflußreichen Niederländer besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, gilt sein Werk doch seit dem Beginn der Aufklärung als unverzichtbare Etappe in der Enttheologisierung des Naturrechts. Erst mit dem Wirken von Christian Thomasius - ihm ist der letzte Schritt der Untersuchung gewidmet - kommt dieser Prozeß nach dessen eigener Einschätzung zu seinem Ende. Zudem erhält der epochale Wandel in der Rechtsbegründung durch Thomasius' dezidiert aufklärerisches Engagement neue Perspektiven, die er selbst zu einer eigenen Version des >aufgeklärten Absolutismus

Legitimitat und politische Macht sind klassische Themen der politischen Theorie und der politischen Soziologie. In der hier vorliegenden Untersuchung sollen zu nachst drei unterschiedliche soziologische Ansatze zu diesen Themen dargestellt und iiberpriift werden. Daran schlieBt sich der Versuch an, die Problemstellung durch Spezifikation einer allgemeinen Theorie sozialer Systeme zu einer Theorie politischer Systeme zu bearbeiten. Es wird dabei an die anderenorts erschienene "Theorie sozialer Systeme" (Opladen 1976) angekniipft. Damit soli gezeigt werden, wie man von relativ allgemeinen und abstrakten Grundannahmen zu konkreten, empirisch iiberpriifbaren Hypothesen iiber klassische Themen gelangen kann. Allge meine Theorienbildung und empirische Forschung konnten auf diese Weise wieder einander naher gebracht werden. Eine Reihe von Problemen konnte ich mit Studenten in Vorlesungen und Seminaren besprechen. Ihre Fragen haben mich vor allem zu verstandlicher Darstellung ge zwungen. Werner Gephart, Tilman Hanckel und Helmut Zehnpfennig haben mehrere Fassungen des Manuskripts gelesen. Ihre kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den Pro blemlosungen hat mir viele Anregungen gegeben. Die Begriffsexplikationen der Va riablen der Theorie (III., 4.2.) habe ich in Zusammenarbeit mit Helmut Zehnpfennig entwickelt. Ihnen allen sei herzlich gedankt.

One of the great paradoxes of post-medieval Europe, is why instead of bringing peace to a disorganised and violent world, modernity instead produced a seemingly endless string of conflicts and social upheavals. Why was it that the foundation and institutionalisation of secured peace and the rule of law seemed to go hand-in-hand with the proliferation of war and the violation of individual and collective rights? In order to try to better understand such profound questions, this volume explores the history and theories of political thought of international relations in the seventeenth century, a period in which many of the defining features and boundaries of modern Europe where fixed and codified. With the discovery of the New World, and the fundamental impact of the Reformation, the complexity of international relations increased considerably. Reactions to these upheavals resulted in a range of responses intended to address the contradictions and conflicts of the anarchical society of states. Alongside the emergence of "modern" international law, the equation of international relations with the state of nature, and the development of the "balance of power", diplomatic procedures and commercial customs arose which shaped the emerging (and current) international system of states. Employing a multidisciplinary approach to address these issues, this volume brings together political scientists, philosophers, historians of political thought, jurists and scholars of international relations. What emerges is a certain tension between the different strands of research which allows for a fruitful new synthesis. In this respect the assembled essays in this volume offer a sophisticated and fresh account of the interactions of law, conflict and the nation state in an early-modern European context.

The Enlightenment was based on the use of reason, common sense, and "natural law," and was paralleled by an emphasis on feelings and the emotions in religious, especially Pietist circles. Progressive thinkers in England, France, and later in Germany began to assail the absolutism of the state and the orthodoxy of the Church; in Germany the line led from Leibniz, Thomasius, and Wolff to Lessing and Kant, and eventually to the rise of an educated upper middle class. Literary developments encompassed the emergence of a national theater, literature, and a common literary language. This became possible in part because of advances in literacy and education, especially among bourgeois women, and the reorganization of book production and the book market. This major new reference work provides a fresh look at the major literary figures, works, and cultural developments from around 1700 up to the late Enlightenment. They trace the 18th-century literary revival in German-speaking countries: from occasional and learned literature under the influence of French Neoclassicism to the establishment of a new German drama, religious epic and secular poetry, and the sentimentalist novel of self-fashioning. The volume includes the new, stimulating works of women, a chapter on music and literature, chapters on literary developments in Switzerland and in Austria, and a chapter on reactions to the Enlightenment from the 19th century to the present.
