Excerpt from North America and Africa: Their Past, Present and Future In offering this little book to the public, the writer begs leave to say it is written in the interest of humanity. He is no politician; never an office-holder, either civil or mili tary, under any government. For thirty years a hard worker in all the financial and benevolent enterprises in his reach; has been a great sufferer in health, spirits and for tune, from the results of the late war, which he had no hand in creating, no power to avert, nor pleasure in its con tinuance; but always viewed it as a great calamity which wise statesmen ought to have prevented; and, failing to do so, believes the private, hard working citizens should no longer suffer for the error of others, but that after four years of devastating war and ten years of hardships, anxiety and distress, we should now be relieved and permitted to spend the remnant of our days in the enjoyment of comfort, peace and prosperity. This introduction to the art of tribal peoples of North America, Africa, and the South Pacific does not briefly cover the hundreds of artistic traditions in these three vast areas but rather studies in depth thirty-six art styles within all three areas using the methods of art history, including stylistic analysis and iconographic interpretation. Emphasis is on the art in cultural context and as a system of visual communication within each tribal area. Where appropriate for a more complete understanding of the art, data from archaeology, ethnology, linguistics, religion, and other humanistic disciplines are included.Among the peoples and cultures whose art is studied are the Haida, Kwakiutl, and Tlingit; the Hohokam and Mongollon, the Anasazi and Hopi; the Dogon and Bamana of Mali; the Asante of Ghana; the Benin, Yoruba, and Ibo of Nigeria; the Fan, the Bamum, and the Kuba of Central Africa; Australian aboriginal and Island New Guinea art; Island Melanesia art; central and eastern Polynesia; Hawaii and the Maori in Marginal Polynesia. The format of the text and selected illustrations is based on seventeen years of teaching African, North American Indian, and South Pacific art to undergraduate and graduate students at Herbert H. Lehman College (CUNY), New York University, and Columbia University. The book is intended for art history and anthropology students and the interested lay reader or collector. The detailed notes at the end of the book are for further study, research, and understanding of the tribal art style under discussion.

Excerpt from North America and Africa: Their Past, Present and Future and Key to the Negro Problem For Third Edition of north america and africa their past, present and future. Having written a small book entitled as above the First Edition appeared on the 20th Of May (our Mecklenburg Independence Day) 1875. TO prove that America, though when discovered, was occu pied by the Aborigines, was destined to become the home of the White man; and Africa was and should ever be the future home Of the negro race, unmixed with or unmolested by others. Four years later a Second Edition appeared in an enlarged and im proved form, though both were premature, as they asked for national aid to accomplish the Objects named. Believing the time has now come for ac tion, the author proposes now to issue the Third Edition, not only to give additional proof Of the necessity Of the great work, but the manner of doing it to benefit the two Continents and the entire world. From every standpoint, the present time seems to be most opportune and propitious to begin and carry on to a speedy completion of a plan originated in the minds of some of our greatest statesmen and philanthropists, who formed the American Coloniza tion Society eighty years ago, and adopted in early life by the writer and has followed him through many eventful years; now believes hehas formulated a most feasible plan to obtain the great blessing; and having been familiar with the institution Of slavery from childhood to its abolition, and the freedmen constantly since, a period of over three-fourths of a century, and studied the questions involved in all their phases should know whereof he writes. Dedicated to Szzfierz'ng Humanity. Fraternally, author. Statesville, N. C., Feb. 22nd, 1904. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "...an adventure story more thrilling than Defoe or Melville could have imagined."--The Philadelphia Inquirer The true story of America's first great explorer and adventurer—an African slave named Esteban Dorantes Crossing the Continent takes us on an epic journey from Africa to Europe and America as Dr. Robert Goodwin chronicles the incredible adventures of the African slave Esteban Dorantes (1500-1539), the first pioneer from the Old World to explore the entirety of the American south and the first African-born man to die in North America about whom anything is known. Goodwin's groundbreaking research in Spanish archives has led to a radical new interpretation of American history—one in which an African slave emerges as the nation's first great explorer and adventurer. Nearly three centuries before Lewis and Clark's epic trek to the Pacific coast, Esteban and three Spanish noblemen survived shipwreck, famine, disease, and Native American hostility to make the first crossing of North America in recorded history. Drawing on contemporary accounts and long-lost records, Goodwin recounts the extraordinary story of Esteban's sixteenth-century odyssey, which began in Florida and wound through what is now Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, as far as the Gulf of California. Born in Africa and captured at a young age by slave traders, Esteban was serving his owner, a Spanish captain, when their disastrous sea voyage to the New World nearly claimed his life. Eventually he emerged as the leader of the few survivors of this expedition, guiding them on an extraordinary eight-year march westward to safety. Filled with tales of physical endurance, natural calamities, geographical wonders, strange discoveries, and Esteban's almost mystical dealings with Native Americans, Crossing the Continent challenges the traditional telling of our nation's early history, placing an African and his relationship with the Indians he encountered at the heart of a new historical record.
