Excerpt from North Carolina Museum of Art Bulletin, 1997, Vol. 17 Pre-eminent scholar, sought - after connoisseur, and master museum builder, the German-born Valentiner was a central figure on the American art scene for much of the first half of this century. As director of the Detroit Institute of Arts in the 19205 and 19305, he guided the development of its distinguished Collections as well as seéuring its international reputation. Subsequently, as co-director-consultant at the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science and Art, he engineered its division, thereby helping to create the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. From there, Valentiner led J. Paul Getty's early efforts to establish his museum before being persuaded in 1955 to become the first director of the North Carolina Museum of Art. He served here from 1956 until his death in September of 1958. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from North Carolina Museum of Art Bulletin, Vol. 1: Spring 1957 But there is one more proof for this dating of our painting. Three times has Tintoretto made use of the forge motive. One of the four paintings which he executed for the Salotto Dorato of the Ducal Palace, in 1578, shows. The Forge of Vulcan again. As in our painting, four figures surround the anvil, but no story is told. All emphasis is on the melodious rhythm of the action of forging. There is no interest in the descrip tion of the Cyclopes, who appear here as normal human beings. Placed in an even distribution around the anvil, the rise and fall of their hammers conveys the feeling of an incessant circulating motion, a dynamic manifestation of movement in space and time. This version of the motive is certainly a long way from the graceful, decorative arrangement of our painting. The motive appears for the third time in one of Tintoretto's most mature paintings, the Gathering of the Manna in San Giorgio Maggiore, from about 1594. In the upper left corner of this wonderfully exuberant symphony to the praise of this life on earth are three men gathered around an anvil. The almost jubilant intensity of their movements seems to rotate around the anvil in a frenzy' of action. Thus, the three versions of our motive really sum up the whole course of Tintoretto's transfor mation from a graceful representative of the dying High Renaissance to the forceful innovator of the baroque. "Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) was a Flemish Baroque painter whose work has largely been overshadowed by his contemporaries Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. Providing new insight on the artist as well as art historical context for his works, Jacob Jordaens and Antiquity emphasizes his strategic intelligence with respect to imagery and the art market and challenges the common characterization of Jordaens as a bourgeois artist of genre scenes. Jordaens's work is examined as an example of classical culture being introduced into the commercial and intellectual life of Antwerp. He was an artist with an unusual talent for conveying imagery from classical literature, ranging from Satyr and Peasant to Diogenes Searching for an Honest Man. Focusing on the theme of antiquity, this volume features eighty paintings, drawings, tapestries, and sculptures from private collections and major museums, including the Museo Nacional del Prado in Spain and the Statens Museum for Kunst in Denmark."--Publisher's website.

The artist's training and his relationship to Rembrandt and other artists in the Rembrandt circle are examined, as is his Venetian period and the relation of his style to that of German-born painter Johann Carl Loth. Drost emerges as one of Rembrandt's most talented imitators and, despite his very short career, an artist with a variety of faces."--BOOK JACKET.
