Gothic art finds its roots in the powerful architecture of the cathedrals of northern France. It is a medieval art movement that evolved throughout Europe over more than 200 years. Leaving curved Roman forms behind, the architects started using flying buttresses and pointed arches to open up cathedrals to daylight. A period of great economic and social change, the Gothic era also saw the development of a new iconography celebrating the Holy Mary – in drastic contrast to the fearful themes of dark Roman times. Full of rich changes in all of the various art forms (architecture, sculpture, painting, etc.), Gothic art paved the way for the Italian Renaissance and International Gothic movement.

Gothic Art From The Twelfth To Fifteenth Centuries written by Andrew Martindale and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1967 with Art, Gothic categories.

Few artistic terms have had such a confused history as the word "Gothic." Andrew Martindale approaches this complex period by first setting up terms with which to deal with it. He considers Gothic art basically as the style that developed in the Ile-de-France and northern France from 1140 to 1240. He traces the ascendancy of the style in other areas of France and in adjoining countries until 1250, when Paris had become an important artistic center and the norther French style had been widely adopted outside France. then Martindale treats Italian art of the next century, which culminated in the painting of Giotto. He shows how the Gothic style influenced the Italians and how their style in turn began to spread northward. From 1350 to 1400, there was increased exchange of artistic ideas across the Alps. There is a chapter on the brief floweirng of Prague as the center of a curiously hybrid culture at this time. "Gothic Art" is equally comprehensive in its treatment of the minor arts of the age and their interrelations -- painting, manuscript illumination, stained glass, tapestry, and metalwork. -- From publisher's description.

Renaissance Gothic written by Ethan Matt Kavaler and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with Architecture categories.

This compelling book offers a new paradigm for the periodization of the arts, one that counters a prevailing Italianate bias among historians of northern Europe of this era. The years after 1500 brought the construction of several iconic Late Gothic monuments, including the transept facades of Beauvais cathedral in northern France, much of King's College in Cambridge, England, and the parish church at Annaberg in Saxony. Most designers and patrons preferred this elite Gothic style, which was considered fashionable and highly refined, to alternative Italianate styles. Ethan Matt Kavaler connects Gothic architecture to related developments in painting and other media, and considers the consequences of the breakdown of the Gothic system in the early 16th century. Late Gothic architecture is recognized for its sensuous and abundant ornament. Its visually rich surfaces signify wealth and magnificence, and its flamboyant geometric designs portray a system of perfect and essential forms that convey spiritual authority, while often serving as signs of personal or corporate identity. Renaissance Gothic presents a groundbreaking and detailed study of the Gothic architecture of the late 15th and 16th centuries across Europe.

The story behind one of the most famous paintings in American art. The stern, sober countenance of the elderly farmer. The quiet, loyal character of his prim wife. Few other paintings are so instantly recognizable as Grant Wood's masterpiece American Gothic. Bestselling Chicago author Thomas Hoving brings to life Wood himself and illuminates, as only he can, the allure of this iconic painting. This is the lively biography of Grant Wood, whose roots grew deep in the heartland of America, a poor kid in a small Iowa town. His painting was a reflection of the place where he lived and the world he knew. It is also a biography of the painting itself, from its inspiration, to its controversial unveiling at a juried exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago-where it earned derision, praise, and a bronze medal-to its eventual acceptance and recognition as a true original work of art. Today it ranks with the Mona Lisa and Edvard Munch's The Scream as one of the most well-known (and parodied) paintings in the world-and it remains a beloved piece of Americana.
