This revised edition of the Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography brings together the entries from the original three volumes, published in 1990, 1992 and 1996. The Dictionary spans the period from the early British and French explorers of the Northern Territory coast to the mid 1990s and aims to provide a broad reflection of life in the Territory rather than focusing on eminent public figures. In some cases this has meant that some subjects are included about whom relatively little is known. Authors come from the widest possible cross-section of the community and there is a considerable range of writing styles. The principal interest of the volume is the Northern Territory. In all cases, the Territory experience of subjects, however eminent they might have been elsewhere, is thus the focal point of entries. This volume is available on CD (ISBN 9780980384697) and in this limited paperback edition.

[http://www.cdu.edu.au/cdupress/books/far-country.htm] This fifth edition of the classic history has been revised to bring the Territory story into the 21st Century. A.T. Yarwood, on the first (1982) edition of Far Country: Powell has achieved an outstanding success. He writes with economy, power and humanity of all the main phases of the Territory's history, starting with the coming of the Aborigines. He moves easily from the broad sweep of the geographical and political context to the sharp focus of personality and action. Don Garden on the fourth (2000)edition. This is now effectively a classic history. Far Country is a fascinating and admirable history of the Northern Territory. With commanding sweep, Powell places this remote outpost within the broader perspective of world events, whether it be expanding Asian empires, European trading relations and wars, or South Australian and federal politics. It ranges broadly over the expected themes of a regional history, Aboriginal society. European exploration and the early European colonial settlements, race relations, the struggle to establish viable industries, urban settlements, politics, local cultural elements, literature and some of the significant individuals. But the context of the Territory adds piquancy to the story because of its environmental and human uniqueness. To an observer from the south, it is a far country. Alan Powell is Emeritus Professor of History at Charles Darwin University. In addition to Far Country, he is the author of Patrician Democrat, The Shadow's Edge, War By Stealth, The Third Force and was the General Editor of The Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography, Volume 1.

Volume 17 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography contains 658 biographies of individuals who died between 1981 and 1990. The first of two volumes for the decade, it presents a colourful mosaic of twentieth-century Australian life. It contains biographies of well-known identities such as Sir Henry Bolte, Sir Robert Askin, Sir Reginald Ansett, Sir Macfarlane Burnet, Sir Raphael and Lady Cilento, Sir Arthur Coles, Robert Holmes-O-Court, Sir Warwick Fairfax, Sir Edmund Herring, Albert Facey, Donald Friend, Sir Roy Grounds, Sir Bernard Heinze and Sir Robert Helpmann. Eminent Australian women in the volume include Dame Elizabeth Couchman, Dame Kate Campbell, Dame Doris Fitton, Dame Zara Holt and Lady (Maie) Casey. Although many of the women achieved prominence in those professions conventionally regarded as the preserve of women, othersandmdash;such as Ruby Boye-Jones, coast-watcher; Ellen Cashman, union organiser; Elsie Chauvel, film-maker; Dorothy Crawford, radio producer; Ruth Dobson, diplomat; Mary Hodgkin, anthropologist; Margaret Kelly, restaurateur; and Patricia Jarrett, journalistandmdash;demonstrate that some women at least were breaking free of the constraints of traditional expectations. The lives of fifteen Indigenous Australians are included, as are those of a number of immigrants who fled from persecution in Europe to establish a new life in Australia.

This is a full and revealing account of the perilous and adventurous course of the Northern Territory; a comprehensive account of its history which debunks the myths and makes human both the high and low points. During the second half of this century writers, journalists and the tourist trade have promoted the image of the Territory as Australia's last frontier. To many Australians who live south of the Tropic of Capricorn the far north is still outside the real Australia. Until recently it was an area largely neglected by Australian historians who concentrated their work on the south-east corner of the continent. Alan Powell's work was one of the first to help redress that balance. The Northern Territory is a wondrous place of bizarre natural history and eccentric personalities; of great unrest and great triumph. Far Country presents the place and its story with skill and simplicity.

Volume 19 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB) contains concise biographies of individuals who died between 1991 and 1995. The first of two volumes for the 1990s, it presents a colourful montage of late twentieth-century Australian life, containing the biographies of significant and representative Australians. The volume is still in the shadow of World War II with servicemen and women who enlisted young appearing, but these influences are dimming and there are now increasing numbers of non-white, non-male, non-privileged and non-straight subjects. The 680 individuals recorded in volume 19 of the ADB include Wiradjuri midwife and Ngunnawal Elder Violet Bulger; Aboriginal rights activist, poet, playwright and artist Kevin Gilbert; and Torres Strait Islander community leader and land rights campaigner Eddie Mabo. HIV/AIDS child activists Tony Lovegrove and Eve Van Grafhorst have entries, as does conductor Stuart Challender, ‘the first Australian celebrity to go public’ about his HIV/AIDS condition in 1991. The arts are, as always, well-represented, including writers Frank Hardy, Mary Durack and Nene Gare, actors Frank Thring and Leonard Teale and arts patron Ian Potter. We are beginning to see the effects of the steep rise in postwar immigration flow through to the ADB. Artist Joseph Stanislaw Ostoja-Kotkowski was born in Poland. Pilar Moreno de Otaegui, co-founded the Spanish Club of Sydney. Chinese restaurateur and community leader Ming Poon (Dick) Low migrated to Victoria in 1953. Often we have a dearth of information about the domestic lives of our subjects; politician Olive Zakharov, however, bravely disclosed at the Victorian launch of the federal government’s campaign to Stop Violence Against Women in 1993 that she was a survivor of domestic violence in her second marriage. Take a dip into the many fascinating lives of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
