Across the world, from Beijing to Birmingham, people are talking about loss: about the loss that occurs when populations try to make new lives in new lands as well as the loss of traditions, languages and landscapes. The Geography of Nostalgia is the first study of loss as a global and local phenomenon, something that occurs on many different scales and which connects many different people. The Geography of Nostalgia explores nostalgia as a child of modernity but also as a force that exceeds and challenges modernity. The book begins at a global level, addressing the place of nostalgia within both global capitalism and anti-capitalism. In Chapter Two it turns to the contested role of nostalgia in debates about environmentalism and social constructionism. Chapter Three addresses ideas of Asia and India as nostalgic forms. The book then turns to more particular and local landscapes: the last three chapters explore the yearnings of migrants for distant homelands, and the old cities and ancient forests that are threatened by modernity but which modern people see as sites of authenticity and escape. Golan argues that reactionary issues such as anti-urbanism, the return to the soil, regionalism, corporatism, xenophobia, and doubts about the new technology became central to cultural and art-historical discourse. Focusing on the overlap of avant-garde and middle-of-the-road production, she investigates the import of these issues not only in, painting, sculpture, and architecture (concentrating on the work of Leger, Picasso, Le Corbusier, Ozenfant, Derain, the Surrealists, and the so-called naifs), but also in the decorative arts, in the spectacle of world and colonial fairs, and in literature. Throughout she finds evidence that artists turned from the aesthetics of the machine age toward a more organic, naturalistic art. This leads her to ask whether the famous and momentous shift of the avant-garde from Paris to New York in 1939 did not, in fact, begin two decades earlier, in 1918.

How can the concept of nostalgia illuminate the culturally specific ways in which societies understand the contested relationship between the past, present, and future? The word nostalgia was invented in the late seventeenth century to describe the debilitating effects of homesickness. Now widely defined as a sense of longing for a lost past, initially it was more closely linked with dislocation in space. By exploring some of its many textual, visual and musical manifestations in the tumultuous period between c. 1350 and 1800, this volume resists the assumption that nostalgia is a distinctive by-product of modernity. It also forges a fruitful link between three lively areas of current scholarly enquiry: memory, temporality, and emotion. The contributors deploy nostalgia as a tool for investigating perceptions of the passage of time and historical change, unsettling experiences of migration and geographical displacement, and the connections between remembering and forgetting, affect and imagination. Ranging across Europe and the Atlantic world, they examine the moments, sites and communities in which it arose, alongside how it was used to express both criticism and regret about the religious, political, social and cultural upheavals that shaped the early modern world. They approach it as a complex mixed feeling that opens a new window into individual subjectivities and collective mentalities.

Literary critics have identified nostalgia as a prominent theme in early twentieth-century American literature, yet these critics have been divided in their assessments of how nostalgia functions in these novels. Some have argued that nostalgia is a form of escapism and regression, a way of avoiding the increasing modernization of society occurring at the turn of the century. Others view nostalgia as a progressive way of critiquing the present, of rejecting modernity, and as a return to the past in order to apply traditional ideals in an attempt to revise or compensate for the present. Both of these explanations of nostalgia privilege the past over the present and imply that modernity is a condition to be overcome. This study suggests that nostalgia functions in a more complex way than previous theories have accounted for and allows for a negotiation of past and present that facilitates adaptation to, and ultimately acceptance of, modernity. Through examination of three early twentieth-century novels-The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and The Professor's House by Willa Cather-nostalgia is revealed as a means of transition to a new era by sustaining a connection to the familiarity of the past and acts as a continual process of determining what aspects of history are compatible with the modern world and what elements must be left in the past. Both psychoanalytic and cultural materialist approaches are used in this dissertation in order to reveal the complicated interplay between identity and material objects that occurs through nostalgia, particularly in the early twentieth century. More specifically, this study focuses on representations of houses and the objects within them to show how these objects evoke nostalgia and connections to tradition while they simultaneously allow for participation in a distinctly modern consumer society. This dual nature of nostalgia was, in fact, used as a marketing strategy at the turn of the century at a time when concerns over one's authenticity, in relation to anxieties regarding the perceived inauthenticity of modernity, were at an all-time high. Ultimately, this dissertation suggests that the early twentieth-century novel highlights the crucial role that nostalgia plays in enacting a negotiation between past and present that, rather than forcing modernity to conform to history, allows for the integration of elements of the past into modern life and the critical distance to more fully comprehend the gap between past and present.

Some of the most pressing contemporary issues (ecological crisis, migration and integration, fragmented worldviews, social media, fake news, extremist politics and terrorism) can be understood more profoundly through how they interact with both individual and collective forces of nostalgia. Nostalgia is politics, but these politics are also interwoven with media and culture. Notwithstanding how nostalgia is used or contextualized in terms of politics and social practices, commodification or personal development, its power is primarily situated within its efficacy as a governing, influential human emotion. The vast and luminous contributions to this special issue on contemporary nostalgia are all investigating the role different aesthetic media formats (film, music, literature, computer games) plays in nostalgic negotiations with style, history, migration, love, nationalism, diaspora, irony, modernity, colonial and postcolonial discourses, and adoption. Mutually, these essays stand out as important, original, critical contributions to the expanding field of nostalgia studies and offer a valued insight on our world.
