L’intensa meditazione intorno alla realtà della preghiera al centro di questo volume non viene, come sarebbe pure lecito attendersi, dalla testa e dalle mani di un qualche chierico, maschio ovviamente. Per Adriana Zarri la preghiera non è questione di formule o di linguaggi, di riti o di pratiche, di richieste petulanti o di obblighi da assolvere. La preghiera è piuttosto una questione ontologica: cioè del nostro essere, del nostro stare al mondo, del nostro modo di vivere; e nello stesso tempo è una questione di amore: dell’amore che portiamo al mistero dell’essere che da ogni parte si affaccia all’orizzonte della nostra esistenza e che nella religione ha il nome di Dio. Accogliere e lasciarsi accogliere da questo mistero dell’essere è in verità l’ultimo e intimo segreto di ciò che chiamiamo preghiera.

This collection presents innovative research by scholars from across the globe in celebration of Gabriele Boccaccini’s sixtieth birthday and to honor his contribution to the study of early Judaism and Christianity. In harmony with Boccaccini’s determination to promote the study of Second Temple Judaism in its own right, this volume includes studies on various issues raised in early Jewish apocalyptic literature (e.g., 1 Enoch, 2 Baruch, 4 Ezra), the Dead Sea Scrolls, and other early Jewish texts, from Tobit to Ben Sira to Philo and beyond. The volume also provides several investigations on early Christianity in intimate conversation with its Jewish sources, consistent with Boccaccini’s efforts to transcend confessional and disciplinary divisions by situating the origins of Christianity firmly within Second Temple Judaism. 1565, Venezia. Il sole non lambisce ancora il camposanto di San Zaccaria, quando il vecchio Giovanni si cala nella tomba del chierico Gregorio Eparco, il suo antico tutore, appena riesumata dai pissegamorti in cambio di tre ducati. Non vuole trafugare la bara di legno marcio o le ossa ricoperte di lanugine e muffa. Sta cercando un libercolo. Un diario «avvolto in una pezza di tela cerata, sigillata da un nastro nero», che lui stesso, cinquantanni prima, ha nascosto sotto la nuca del maestro, dopo aver giurato di non sfogliarlo né di farne parola con nessuno. Il giuramento, però, ora può essere infranto, poiché le annotazioni contenute in quellinvolucro sono lunico indizio in grado di condurre ad alcune preziosissime reliquie cristiane andate perdute. Il diario si apre nel 1452, quando Gregorio «la barba folta e nera» e un «fisico più da rematore che da mercante» giunge ad Adrianopoli insieme con il suo socio daffari, lebreo-veneziano Malachia Bassan. La città, strappata a Venezia dagli Ottomani un secolo prima, offre uno spettacolo raccapricciante agli occhi dei due giovani mercanti. Ventotto marinai di una galea da mercado della Serenissima, accusata di aver disubbidito agli ordini provenienti dalla fortezza di Boghaz-kesen, fatta costruire da Maometto II per controllare il traffico sul Bosforo, sono stati torturati, uccisi e lasciati alla mercé dei cani nelle pubbliche vie. Lintento del giovane Sultano, un ragazzo di diciannove anni magro e pallido, è chiaro: offrire una dimostrazione di forza prima di cingere dassedio la città che, per i cristiani, è la madre e la guida di tutto il mondo, lancella stessa del Padre: Costantinopoli, larca di santità che custodisce il maggior numero di reliquie cristiane. Mentre uno sparuto esercito di genovesi, greci e veneziani tenta di respingere lassalto dei turchi, Gregorio ha unidea: recuperare tutti «i frammenti di Paradiso» appartenuti ai santi e disseminati nelle chiese, nei sotterranei e dentro il Grande Palazzo imperiale di Costantinopoli, per salvare in tal modo la Cristianità. Unidea allettante anche per Malachia Bassan, nella cui mente si affaccia il pensiero che, male che vada, quelle reliquie così preziose possono pur sempre essere vendute. Così tra imboscate, fughe ed enigmi, i due giovani mercanti si accingono allimpresa Con una documentazione sterminata capace di riprodurre fedelmente larchitettura di Costantinopoli cinta dassedio dagli Ottomani e le strategie militari, le lingue, i culti e i costumi dellepoca, Paolo Malaguti scrive un romanzo davventura dallinarrestabile tensione narrativa. E ci consegna due protagonisti memorabili, figli del XV secolo: il saggio e ossequioso chierico Gregorio e limprevedibile ebreo Malachia.
