A delightfully-written exploration of faith for those who are searching and for those who are settled What if we stopped trying to find the perfect church in the right Christian tradition and intentionally explored our faith with all our Christian brothers and sisters? Can Christians embrace God fully by exploring other faith traditions? In Not All Who Wander, we discover that we do indeed find Jesus in a church, and traces of him in our everyday lives as well. Not All Who Wander walks readers through the author’s faith journey, and how her experience with churches in a number of traditions has left her longing for more of Jesus than any one church offers. It also presents stories from other believers to give readers a sense of how alike, and different, our spiritual experiences can be. Rhoades has developed a passion for discovering all the ways we worship Jesus and invites readers to join her. With utter delight, she’s discovered no matter which traditions she worships with, Jesus meets her there.

A spiritual journey may take many forms, from Dante’s descent to the pits of Hell and up the other side to the bliss of Paradise, to Pilgrim’s progress (or even to Billy Pilgrim, unstuck in time in Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five). It could be Elijah running headlong into the desert, or Jonah being flung ashore and shouting in Nineveh, a petulant prophet to the end. Faith can be carried like pennies in the pocket or worn like a coat of many colors. Abraham and Moses, Mary and Peter—all of them carried their faith, and all of them had their doubts. Doubt is the companion of faith, and the mystery that bonds them together comes out in stories. These are stories of faith, doubt, and mystery. Not all who wander are lost.

"Many traditional religious institutions, particularly Christianity, find the 21st century American spiritual context to be a challenge to dogma and a threat to institutional survival. Current statistics show an increasing number of Americans identifying as "Spiritual But Not Religious" (SBNR), a rejection of the limitations and abuses of institutional religion based upon static rules and mores in favor of a syncretic or hybrid faith based upon self-knowledge and intuition. Practically, this syncretic or hybrid faith is formed in a process of intentional spiritual wandering. The purpose of this dissertation is to compare the SBNR spiritual wandering to the wanderings of historical nomadic people and to propose an approach of hospitality, based on the similarities. The research required for this dissertation involved acquiring knowledge about the characteristics of historical nomadic communities, and the relationship between those communities as institutional religion. Four diverse nomadic groups were studied: the Central European Roma (Gypsies), the Middle Eastern Bedouins, the Northern European Irish Travellers, and the Southern African Khoisan. Then, because SBNR has largely been seen as an individual identifier, the concept of an SBNR community was developed. This was achieved through both informal interview of some who identify SBNR and gleaned from the experience and research done by concerned theologians, pastors, statisticians and social issue documentarians. The similarities between historical nomadic community and SBNR community suggest that the SBNR community has something positive to contribute to theology, especially in the area of interfaith awareness, appreciation, cooperation, and relationships. Inspired by SBNR hybridity, institutional religions might discover commonalities which, in turn, may encourage authenticity and expansion beyond exclusivism and contribute to peace-building efforts. Acknowledgment of and appreciation for these gifts of wandering could usher in a new era of compassion and inclusion within spiritual and religious circles"--First page.

Through every turn of the biblical story, God's people are a wandering people. When they are rescued from slavery in Egypt, God sends them into the desert, where they wander for a generation. Jesus and his disciples wander from town to town. In fact, some of God's most important truths are imparted to people with dusty feet as they travel on the road. With his trademark thoughtful introspection, A. J. Swoboda boldly suggests that wandering is not an absence of faith but a central component of faith. In The Dusty Ones, he leads the restless, the frustrated, and the curious on a spiritual journey to uncover the answers to questions like - Do I wander because I'm failing or because God has left me? - Is the desert something I can overcome? - Why is God sometimes "hidden" in the Bible? - What do I do when the end seems nowhere in sight? This compassionate and contemplative book offers hope and peace to Christians and seekers alike as they make their way down the winding road of faith.

Do you really need church to have a relationship with God? Church can produce all kinds of automatic reactions depending on your past experiences. Perhaps your family was actively involved in church, or maybe your experience was limited to attending on the occasional holiday. Is it a place you associate with feelings of shame or joy? Does it bring anxiety, or do you have fond memories? Few people are neutral on the subject of church. Are you one of the 16 million American women who have left the church in the last decade? There are many reasons for this exodus. Many women who leave the church--especially those who still consider themselves to be Christians--desire a closer relationship with God and a deeper spiritual life. What they may not realize is that the imperfect churches of their pasts might be keeping them from meeting those deep spiritual longings today. In Reason to Return, Ericka Andersen delves into the reasons why women are leaving church in droves. With gentle insight and thoughtful research, she invites Christian women who are hurt or disillusioned by the churches of their pasts to fulfill their unmet spiritual longings for God and community--and consider what the church might still have to offer them.
