Not Composed In A Chance Manner The Epitaphios For Manuel I Komnenos By Eustathius Of Thessalonike Text Translation Commentary written by Emmanuel Constantine Bourbouhakis and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Funeral orations categories.

Written in 1180--81, the Epitaphios for Manuel I Komnenos, by the Byzantine classical scholar and man of letters, Eustathius of Thessalonike, marked the high point of mediaeval Greek funerary oratory at the close of the greatest revival of Greek rhetoric since the Second Sophistic. Besides securing a reliable text, accompanied by a translation to guide the non-expert reader, the aim throughout has been to identify the constitutive elements, whether rhetorical figures or panegyrical imagery, directed by Eustathius in a virtuoso display of Byzantine oratory. Among the aspects of the work which receive special emphasis are the structurally 'encoded' oral nature of the work as a text intended for performance before an audience of listeners, and the stylistic character of Eustathius' funerary encomium. As a study of the poetics of a self-described 'exemplary' funeral oration, the introduction and the extensive commentary offer both a large and small scale mapping of the style and rhetorical devices of the text. In the course of doing so, key assumptions about Byzantine 'high style' texts and the manner we interpret them are re-evaluated and alternate paradigms are suggested.

In twelfth-century Byzantium, poetry played a key part in various contexts of textual production and consumption. One of the leading poets of this period was Theodoros Prodromos, whose surviving corpus comprises approximately 17,000 verses. Even though most of his poetry has been presented in modern critical editions, a group of his works has been overlooked by modern philologists and literary scholars alike. The selected corpus--conventionally designated as Miscellaneous Poems--consists of texts on various themes and in a wide range of genres, ranging from cycles of religious and secular epigrams to riddles, ethopoiiai, and works of a self-referential and essayistic nature. This book includes the first critical edition and study of these poems, accompanied by English translations and commentaries. Their study contributes to a more nuanced picture of Prodromos' intellectual profile, expanding his image as the 'poet laureate' of the Komnenian court and providing entirely new insights into his activity in the different settings of Constantinopolitan intellectual life. The book also sheds new light on the complex relationship between patronage and other aspects of literary activity and the circulation of the same text in different performative contexts.

This volume, the first ever of its kind in English, introduces and surveys Greek literature in Byzantium (330 - 1453 CE). In twenty-five chapters composed by leading specialists, The Oxford Handbook of Byzantine Literature surveys the immense body of Greek literature produced from the fourth to the fifteenth century CE and advances a nuanced understanding of what "literature" was in Byzantium. This volume is structured in four sections. The first, "Materials, Norms, Codes," presents basic structures for understanding the history of Byzantine literature like language, manuscript book culture, theories of literature, and systems of textual memory. The second, "Forms," deals with the how Byzantine literature works: oral discourse and "text"; storytelling; rhetoric; re-writing; verse; and song. The third section ("Agents") focuses on the creators of Byzantine literature, both its producers and its recipients. The final section, entitled "Translation, Transmission, Edition," surveys the three main ways by which we access Byzantine Greek literature today: translations into other Byzantine languages during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages; Byzantine and post-Byzantine manuscripts; and modern printed editions. The volume concludes with an essay that offers a view of the recent past--as well as the likely future--of Byzantine literary studies.

Romanland written by Anthony Kaldellis and has been published by Belknap Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with History categories.

Was there ever such a thing as the Byzantine Empire and who were those self-professed Romans we choose to call "Byzantine" today? At the heart of these two interlinked questions is Anthony Kaldellis's assertion that empires are, by definition, multiethnic. If there was indeed such a thing as the Byzantine Empire, which rules bounded majority and minority ethnic groups? The labels for the minority groups in Byzantium are clear - Slavs, Bulgarians, Armenians, Jews, Muslims. What was the ethnicity of the majority group? Historical evidence tells us unequivocally that no card-carrying Byzantine ever called himself "Byzantine." He would identify as Roman. This line of identification was so strong in the eastern empire that even the conquering Ottomans saw themselves as inheritors of the Roman Empire. In Western scholarship, however, there has been a long tradition of denying Romanness to Byzantium. In the Middle Ages, people of the eastern empire were made "Greeks," and by the nineteenth century they were shorn of their distorted Greekness and turned "Byzantine." In Romanland, Kaldellis argues that it is time for historians to take the Romanness of Byzantines seriously so that we can better understand the relations between Romans and non-Romans, as well as the processes of assimilation that led to the absorption of foreign groups into the Roman genos.--
