Excerpt from Not Tradition, but Scripture As a conclusion to these few remarks, let the Author here express hls s1ncere hope and belief, that not a word will be found in the following. Pages inconsistent with the feelings of Christian charity, or incompatible with his real respect for the undoubted good intentions of the party to whose vlews he is Opposed. That they have adopted distorted views of many portions of God's revealed will, he does not hesitate in stating as his decided conviction. And under this impression he has feltit his duty to enter his protest against a system of doctrine opposed, as he conceives, to sound evangelical orthodoxy. But in justice to them he feels himself also bound to state, that in many respects he conceives them to have done good service to the cause of religion, by the Opposition which they have made to the laxity of modern unchristian speculation, and the increased attention which they have excited in the public mind with respect to the polity and discipline of the primi tive Church. Excerpt from The Living Temple, or Scriptural Views of the Church The fact, that Mr. Newman's Essay on the development of Christian Doctrine was written after he became, though before he avowed himself, a Romanist, destroys not its force as a true exponent of the tendency of the Tractarian doctrine on the subject of Tradition. The starting point of that doctrine cannot be distinctly and intelligent ly assumed, and the line of that doctrine honestly and logically follow ed, without reaching an elevation of authority and of value not only with but above the Word of God. Whether or not the advocates of that doctrine ever go, with Mr. Newman, to the length of receiving the peculiar doctrines of the Church of Rome, while admitting that those doctrines find no support, or none but the most dreamy, in the Bible; and that many of the peculiarities of that Church have been developed in a way, of Which the Ancient Hannsms were but the premature, and therefore abortive, anticipations - whether or not they ever reach tins extreme of bold but desperate honesty, - they, at least, cannot logically stop, till, like the Pharisees of old, they have, however unintentionally, yet virtually, made the Word of God of none effect by their Tradi tion. Hitherto, they have really believed the Bible from the first verse in Genesis to the last in Revelations. They supposed that God was the author. The idea that he had left the proof-reading to fallible man had never entered their heads. But now every one is familiar with the fact that there are thousands of different read ings that can only be settled by majority vote. They cannot but reflect that, if these men can change it today, other men may do so again to-morrow. On finding what were to them some of the sublime passages left out, they will naturally ask themselves, If man composed these, why may he not lie the author of it all? The Bible in many a house, regarded in the light of a fetich, will lose much of its sacred character when the revealing light of the new version falls on it. This new version will also set thousands of people to reading the Bible. The reason why many think so much of this book is because they never read it. They have imagined that all the good, true, and beautiful things the ministers find in it are really there. By reading it for themselves, they will discover the deception. I think that, if any one would read the Bible for the purpose of deciding the ques tion of its divinity, they would find a ver dict against it long before reaching the New Testament. The Catholic Church obeys the law of self-preservation by withholding the Bible from the laity. The Pope knows better than to countenance a new version. The friends of humanity can congratulate them selves that Protestantism likes the taste of the poison that will destroy it.
