Novalis is best known in history as the poet of early German Romanticism. However, this translation of Das Allgemeine Brouillon, or "Universal Notebook," finally introduces him to the English-speaking world as an extraordinarily gifted philosopher in his own right and shatters the myth of him as a mere daydreaming and irrational poet. Composed of more than 1,100 notebook entries, this is easily Novalis's largest theoretical work and certainly one of the most remarkable and audacious undertakings of the "Golden Age" of German philosophy. In it, Novalis reflects on numerous aspects of human culture, including philosophy, poetry, the natural sciences, the fine arts, mathematics, mineralogy, history, and religion, and brings them all together into what he calls a "Romantic Encyclopaedia" or "Scientific Bible." Novalis's Romantic Encyclopaedia fully embodies the author's own personal brand of philosophy, "Magical Idealism." With meditations on mankind and nature, the possible future development of our faculties of reason, imagination, and the senses, and the unification of the different sciences, these notes contain a veritable treasure trove of richly poetic and philosophic thoughts.

Part of the "Literary Movements" series, this title examines the people, events, and works that defined the literary Romantic era in Great Britain and Ireland from 1775 through the 1830s. An introductory essay summarizes the movement's origins and philosophy. This A-to-Z-format work provides brief biographies, plot summaries, and critical interpretations of both the popular, well-known Romantics and the many often-overlooked, lesser-known writers. Designed to "whet the reader's appetite" for further exploration of this fascinating period and to focus on how closely Romantic writers are connected to their contemporary world, the book offers signed essays on industrialism, the monarchy, the American and French Revolutions, childhood, slavery, and many other topics. Many articles offer suggestions for further reading. Comparing this title to Encyclopedia of the Romantic Era, 1760-1850, edited by C. J. Murray (CH, Jun'04, 41-5628), reveals that the newer volume includes more close analysis of individual works and features a larger number of lesser-known writers, particularly women. Rather than being a substitute, it is best used in conjunction with the Murray title. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and above; general readers. General Readers; Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by R. B. Meeker.

The Oxford Handbook Of European Romanticism written by Paul Hamilton and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-14 with Literary Criticism categories.

TThe Oxford Handbook to European Romanticism brings together leading scholars in the field to examine the intellectual, literary, philosophical, and political elements of European Romanticism. The book focuses on the cultural history of the period extending from the French Revolution to the uprisings of 1848. It begins with a series of chapters examining key texts written by major writers in languages including: French; German; Italian; Spanish; Russian; Hungarian; Greek; and Polish amongst others. A second section then explores the naturally inter-disciplinary quality of Romanticism, exemplified by the different discourses with which writers of the time set up an internal, comparative dynamic. These chapters highlight the sense a discourse gives of being written knowledgeably against other pretenders to completeness or comprehensiveness of self-understanding of the time. Discourses typically advance their own claims to resume European culture, collaborating with and at the same time trying to assimilate each other in the process. The main examples featured here are: history; geography; drama; theology; language; philosophy; political theory; the sciences; and the media. Each chapter offers an original and individual interpretation of an inherently comparative world of individual writers and the discursive idioms to which they are historically subject. Together the forty-one chapters provide a comprehensive and provocative overview of European Romanticism.
