Interpreting The Ripper Letters written by M. J. Trow and has been published by Pen and Sword this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-30 with True Crime categories.

This true crime history examines the media frenzy surrounding Jack the Ripper—and what the so-called Ripper Letters reveal about Victorian society. In the autumn of 1888, a series of grisly murders took place in Whitechapel in London’s East End. The Whitechapel murderer, arguably the first of his kind, was never caught, though the police and local press received hundreds of letters claiming to be from the killer. Though most if not all of these letters were hoaxes, they gave rise to the best known pen-name in criminal history: Jack the Ripper. Some letters were taken more seriously than others, while a few—such as the infamous “Dear Boss” letter—sent thousands on a hunt to follow its clues. This book is not about the world’s first serial killer but about the twisted souls who played the part on paper, implicated innocent men, or suggested ever more lurid ways in which he could be caught. For true crime historian M.J. Trow, these letters offer a window into the disturbing shadows of the Victorian mind.

Notes My Father Left Me creates a detailed sketch of a widowed father who papered his own house with notes written to himself and to anyone else who might be around. When he died, his son, Ray Iallonardo, found the notes. He then decided to combine them with his own reminiscences and comments, creating an unusual portraiture of a man who held strong opinions and who found no details too small to merit his attention. In the end, the fathers notes enabled him posthumously to become the straight man for his sons lovingly humorous and slightly sentimental musings. If you find joy in seeing the deep reserves of mirth that can flow from the tiny and mundane details of life and if you enjoy seeing someones likeness emerge from a mosaic of many small tiles, then you will enjoy reading the words and viewing the images in Notes My Father Left Me. When you are finished, you may find yourself tempted to post a note on the cover of this book: Keep this and read it again when I need to laugh.

"The authors—a chemical engineer and a civil engineer—have complimented each other in delivering an introductory text on optimization for engineers of all disciplines. It covers a host of topics not normally addressed by other texts. Although introductory in nature, it is a book that will prove invaluable to me and my staff, and belongs on the shelves of practicing environmental and chemical engineers. The illustrative examples are outstanding and make this a unique and special book." —John D. McKenna, Ph.D., Principal, ETS, Inc., Roanoke, Virginia "The authors have adeptly argued that basic science courses—particularly those concerned with mathematics—should be taught to engineers by engineers. Also, books adopted for use in such courses should also be written by engineers. The readers of this book will acquire an understanding and appreciation of the numerous mathematical methods that are routinely employed by practicing engineers. Furthermore, this introductory text on optimization attempts to address a void that exists in college engineering curricula. I recommend this book without reservation; it is a library ‘must’ for engineers of all disciplines." —Kenneth J. Skipka, RTP Environmental Associates, Inc., Westbury, NY, USA Introduction to Optimization for Chemical and Environmental Engineers presents the introductory fundamentals of several optimization methods with accompanying practical engineering applications. It examines mathematical optimization calculations common to both environmental and chemical engineering professionals, with a primary focus on perturbation techniques, search methods, graphical analysis, analytical methods, linear programming, and more. The book presents numerous illustrative examples laid out in such a way as to develop the reader’s technical understanding of optimization, with progressively difficult examples located at the end of each chapter. This book serves as a training tool for students and industry professionals alike. FEATURES Examines optimization concepts and methods used by environmental and chemical engineering practitioners. Presents solutions to real-world scenarios/problems at the end of each chapter. Offers a pragmatic approach to the application of mathematical tools to assist the reader in grasping the role of optimization in engineering problem-solving situations. Provides numerous illustrative examples. Serves as a text for introductory courses, or as a training tool forindustry professionals.

Start A Riot written by Casarae Lavada Abdul-Ghani and has been published by Univ. Press of Mississippi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-27 with Literary Criticism categories.

While the legacy of Black urban rebellions during the turbulent 1960s continues to permeate throughout US histories and discourses, scholars seldom explore within scholarship examining Black Cultural Production, artist-writers of the Black Arts Movement (BAM) that addressed civil unrest, specifically riots, in their artistic writings. Start a Riot! Civil Unrest in Black Arts Movement Drama, Fiction, and Poetry analyzes riot iconography and its usefulness as a political strategy of protestation. Through a mixed-methods approach of literary close-reading, historical, and sociological analysis, Casarae Lavada Abdul-Ghani considers how BAM artist-writers like Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), Ben Caldwell, Gwendolyn Brooks, Sonia Sanchez, and Henry Dumas challenge misconceptions regarding Black protest through experimental explorations in their writings. Representations of riots became more pronounced in the 1960s as pivotal leaders shaping Black consciousness, such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., were assassinated. BAM artist-writers sought to override the public's interpretation in their literary exposés that a riot’s disjointed and disorderly methods led to more chaos than reparative justice. Start a Riot! uncovers how BAM artist-writers expose anti-Black racism and, by extension, the United States' inability to compromise with Black America on matters related to citizenship rights, housing (in)security, economic inequality, and education—tenets emphasized during the Black Power Movement. Abdul-Ghani argues that BAM artist-writers did not merely write literature that reflected a spirit of protest; in many cases, they understood their texts, themselves, as acts of protest.

The Letters Project written by Eleanor Reissa and has been published by Post Hill Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-18 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In 1986, when her mother died at the age of sixty-four, Eleanor Reissa went through all of her belongings. In the back of her mother’s lingerie drawer, she found an old leather purse. Inside that purse was a large wad of folded papers. They were letters. Fifty-six of them. In German. Written in 1949. Letters from her father to her mother, when they were courting. Just four years earlier, he had fought to stay alive in Auschwitz and on the Death March while she had spent the war years suffering in Uzbekistan. Thirty years later, Eleanor—a theatre artist who has been on the forefront of keeping Yiddish alive—finally had the letters translated. The particulars of those letters send her off on an unimaginable adventure into the past, forever changing her and anyone who reads this book. “‘The Holocaust,’ Eleanor Reissa writes in this unforgettable and courageous book, ‘is attached to me like my skin and I would be formless without it.’ A very personal story that is also a fundamental one of a woman trying to make sense of her life and family and of the shadows that go back before she was born. There is plenty of feeling and sentiment but it never feels sentimental. Her inimitable wit leavens the sadder scenes. This journey of discovery is riveting, told with tender insight, at times heartbreaking and at times heartwarming just like the Yiddish songs that have delighted Ms. Reissa’s audiences.” —Joseph Berger is a New York Times reporter and author of Displaced Persons: Growing Up American After the Holocaust “Among the great number of personal takes on the Holocaust, Eleanor Reissa’s book really stands out, both for its intelligence and courage and for the unique way she braids the inter-generational stories together. In this brutal, poignant, and searingly honest book, Reissa simultaneously pieces together the unfathomable story of her Holocaust survivor father, reckons with the guilt she came to feel as his uncomprehending American daughter, and manages somehow to find insight and purpose in the ashes. This extraordinary account of two parallel journeys will stick with anyone privileged enough to read it.” —David Margolick, a former reporter for The New York Times, author of several books, including, most recently, The Promise and the Dream: The Untold Story of Martin Luther King, Jr. And Robert F. Kennedy “The Letters Project is a wonderful book—funny, heartbreaking, and ultimately transcendent. Eleanor Reissa’s journey back into her family’s past makes for a gripping—and very human—international mystery. I highly recommend it.” —Tony Phelan, TV Showrunner for: Grey’s Anatomy, Doubt, and Council of Dads “Eleanor Reissa has written a gritty, fearless yet funny memoir about herself, her family, and the Holocaust. Once I began reading it, I was completely swept away until the journey ended. I was moved by the power of this uniquely personal yet universal story.” —Julian Schlossberg is an American motion pictures, theatre, and television producer

An intimate portrait of Baldwin's mythic life. James Baldwin was one of the most incisive and influential American writers of the twentieth century. Active in the civil rights movement and open about his homosexuality, Baldwin was celebrated for eloquent analyses of social unrest in his essays and for daring portrayals of sexuality and interracial relationships in his fiction. By the time of his death in 1987, both his fiction and nonfiction works had achieved the status of modern classics. James Campbell knew James Baldwin for the last ten years of Baldwin's life. For Talking at the Gates, Campbell interviewed many of Baldwin's friends and professional associates and examined several hundred pages of correspondence. Campbell was the first biographer to obtain access to the large file that the FBI and other agencies had compiled on the writer. Examining Baldwin's turbulent relationships with Norman Mailer, Richard Wright, Marlon Brando, Martin Luther King Jr., and others, this candid and original account portrays the life and work of a writer who held to the principle that "the unexamined life is not worth living." This new edition features a fresh introduction addressing recent developments in Baldwin’s reputation and his return to a position he occupied in the early 1960s, when Life magazine called him "the monarch of the current literary jungle." It also contains a previously unpublished interview with Norman Mailer about Baldwin, which Campbell conducted in 1987.
