As, for the first time since I was returned for the Elgin District in the year 1857, I found myself, on the 8th of December 1886, with no definite work to do, the entries in my Diary became immediately more numerous, since in it I rarely took notice of anything relating either to politics or official business, which claimed the lion's share of my time and thoughts between those two dates. These volumes contain, amongst other things, an account of two visits to Palestine, the second of which extended over a winter and spring. Excerpt from Notes Form a Diary, 1892-1895, Vol. 1 of 2 The two volumes, which I now publish, cover a period of four years, from the beginning of 1892 onwards. Seventy-five is not first youth, even in these days of comparative longevity; but I cherish the hope that I may be able, by the publication of two more volumes, to conclude these Notes with the 23rd January 1901, on which the Privy Council took the oaths to our present King. As they began with New Year's Day in 1851, they will then have extended over half a century. All my earlier books, Studies in European Politics, A Political Survey, Elgin Speeches, etc. - everything indeed which I printed, while I remained in political life, was, whatever else it may have been, as grave as the least frivolous could desire. In the two volumes to which this forms a preface, I have, as in all their predecessors of the same series, resolutely kept to the less serious side of life, and I purpose doing the same to the end. Excerpt from Notes From a Diary, Vol. 1 of 2: Kept Chiefly in Southern India, 1881-1886 The two volumes which I now offer to the indulgence of those who care to follow me into new scenes, cover the period which elapsed between my departure from this country and my laying down the Government of Madras in December 1 8 8 6. So far as I can, I have excluded business, politics, and the graver interests of a Governor from these pages also but there is this difference between the life to which I had been accustomed in the House of Commons, and the life I led in India. The Head of an Indian Government knows nothing of the Recesses which diversify the Parliamentary year and prevent its monotony becoming intolerable. The day hardly ever dawns for him which is not largely occupied with public affairs of one kind or another. That being so, it is hardly possible absolutely to exclude business from these pages but I have done my very best to effect that object. I am the more able to do this, because in 1 884. And 1 8 86 I published in India two Minutes Anglia State-papers in the nature of Bluebooks, which, taken together, set forth pretty fully my views upon the things which most occupied my mind in my capacity of Governor of Madras, and sent copies of them to all my friends in this country whom I thought likely to be interested in Indian Administration. We talked of Mansel, and he told me an excellent saying of the witty Dean which I had not heard. Somebody, horrified at a large statue of Neptune on a monument, said: "That has nothing to do with Christianity!" "Tridentine Christianity!" was the reply. He spoke, likewise, a good deal about Lord Overstone's enormous store of anecdotes. Amongst other strange things which the old man was in the habit of recounting was, that he had seen Peel in tears about the Duke of Wellington, and the Duke of Wellington in tears about Peel. Another of our subject to-night was the Metaphysical Society. The Bishop said that the two men whose metaphysical powers had struck him most at our meetings were Dalgairns and Martineau.
