Excerpt from Notes on Local Anaesthesia in General Surgery IN recent years local anmsthesia has come much into use, especially in Germany, France, and America. It has been shown that in minor, and to a less extent in major surgical operations it can often take the place of a general anaesthetic, and save the patient the risk and discomfort attending the administration of chloro form or ether; whilewith its help many small but painful operations, often done without any anaesthetic, can be done painlessly. Owing to the fact that local aneesthesia has, till recepjt-lyfbeen little used in this country, and that most 'work'on the'subject has been done by German, French, and American surgeons, knowledge of the possibilities attending its use, and of the various methods of inducing it, is by no means general. Excerpt from Surgical Operations With Local Anesthesia In the first edition of this little book I had in mind the needs of the general practitioner in the role of an occasional opera tor. In harmony with this plan the simpler operations alone were described, confining myself to those operations which any one should be able to do with certainty without a great amount of experience in the use of local anesthetics. Contrary to my expectations many surgeons of standing ex pressed an interest in the work and made the suggestion that its scope be widened to meet the need of surgeons. In conform ity with this wish the present work takes in most of the major operations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Local Anaesthesia in General Medicine and Surgery: Being the Practical Application of the Author's Recent Discoveries Be he physician or surgeon, the medical man of today will find that his reputation as a man of parts hinges in great measure upon his ability to avert or relieve suffering. Just in so far as he is able to ac complish this Without danger or inconvenience to his client Will he meet With success in the practice of his profession. Let this fact serve, then, as an excuse for the present contribution to practical neurology. The Spontaneous and practically universal notice accorded my discovery, upon Which this brochure is based, has been a source Of some surprise to the author. I should indeed be guilty of affectation did I not confess that this testimony of approval on the part Of my colleagues in the profession has caused me satisfaction. As time rolls on, I shall hope to prove not unworthy of this confidence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from General and Local Anaesthesia As the success and progress of surgery depend in a large measure upon the safety of anaesthesia, it is evident that too much study can not be given to this subject. Though much has been written on this subject, though the subject is old, Dr. Mc Burney speaks truly when he says Very few medical men administer ether well. As to chloro form, many physicians, conscious that they don't know how to administer it, and not possessing the necessary ambition and energy to learn how to administer it, never make use of it. Many that use it, use it faultily. Lord Lister says: Death from chloroform is almost always due to faultv administration. It is easy to become a compe tent anaesthetist, and it is the duty of every medi cal practitioner to become: one. Anaesthetics be ing used in all the different departments of medi cine, it is imperative that all physicians should know how to skilfully administer ether and chloro form. Excerpt from General and Local Anesthesia The competent anesthetist is the surgeon's most valuable assistant. Conscious of this fact, I have endeavored to present in a concise form, the tech nique of surgical general and local anesthesia. The book could have been made more academical, could have been made to include interesting discussions of as yet unsettled points, but as it was intended for the hospital interne and for the general prac titioner I decided to make it purely practical. Points that admit of controversy I have omitted. The methods that I have outlined are methods that are sanctioned by European and American clin icians. They are methods Which I have tested in my surgical service at the Cook County Hos pital. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The fourth edition of this highly successful textbook discusses the practical applications of the various methods of regional anaesthesia, including ultrasound, as well as giving an account of their theoretical aspects. The well-established author team use their experience to provide a practical and stimulating book which reflects everyday clinical activity, supplemented by high definition ultrasound images and schematic diagrams. The book will also discuss the place of regional anaesthesia in current medical practice, particularly with regard to pain processes, ultrasound imaging, and patient outcomes. Regional anaesthesia is a rapidly expanding sub-speciality of anaesthesia: routine provision of long-lasting pain relief and the introduction of real-time ultrasound block has fuelled a demand for cadaver and ultrasound-based anatomy training courses. Thus, it is more important than ever to have a thorough grounding in this exciting subspecialty.
