Excerpt from Notes on the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota The Cambrian is represented only by the Potsdam and rests unconformably on the Archean schists. NO Silurian or Devonian is found, and the. Potsdam and Carboniferous are conformable. The great deposits are of Archean age and yield mainly auriferous pyrite. There are sometimes lenticular and seemingly inde pendent masses of the slate and schist series sharing the folds and contortions and having a columnar cleavage coincident with the bedding. The porphyry flowed over the Potsdam east of Deadwood and under that in the Homestake to the west, lifting it like a laccolite. The gold was deposited by chemical action after having been segregated. Excerpt from Flora of the Black Hills of South Dakota The outcrop of the Cretaceous sandstone forms the foothills, and that of the Jura formation and the Red Beds makes the so-called Race Track, a more or less continuous valley between the foothills and the hills proper. The Race Track is much broader on the south side and forms the larger part of the Minnekahta Plains. On the east side the Carboniferous limestone belt forms a series of hills, and on the west side, where the strata are nearly horizontal, a broad plateau, the Lime stone District. As the slates and schist are comparatively soft, the center of the Black Hills is lower, except where the granite or igneous roeks come to the surface and form the highest peaks in the range. Excerpt from Pa-Ha-Sa-Pah, or the Black Hills of South Dakota: A Complete History of the Gold and Wonder-Land of the Dakotas, From the Remotest Date Up to the Present About the present condition of the Indians in South Dakota and their advance in civilization I will speak in a subsequent volume if this one finds favor with the public. Also about the work done by the different religious denominations in the Black Hills, and their present con dition and apparent prospect, would have found room in this volume had the amount of material not forbidden me to curtail the same, and due consideration and full satis faction will be given to all of whatever denomination they may be. The kind reader will condone the shortcomings he may find here and there and bear in mind that I do not lay claim to literary merits, and publish the volume for no other purpose than to make the world at large acquainted with that part of the United States which has up to now not found any one to give a complete history about it. The people of the Black Hills will surely be thankful for the pains I have taken to show them all about their homes. Excerpt from The Black Hills of Dakota: A Miniature History of Their Settlement, Resources, Population, and Prospects, With Accurate Tables of Local Distances, and a General Business Directory of the Principal Towns The Black Hills of Dakota were first visited by white men in 1810, when Wilson P. Hunt, Of the American Fur Company, skirted them on the north while leading an expedition overland to the mouth of the Columbia. Soon after the Hunt party passed through, the more daring Of white trappers pushed up the Cheyenne river from the Arickaree and Mandan Indian villages, and occasionally penetrated the wild forests and gloomy gorges of the Black Hills; and in 1830 the Missouri Fur Company established a trading post near the junction of the North and South Forks Of the Cheyenne. T henceforward vague and indefinite reports began to circulate of the existence Of rich gold deposits in the Black Hills; and it seems authenticated that Indians did, as far back as 1849, exhibit specimens Of native gold which they claimed to havel there found. Excerpt from Birds of South Dakota Effort has been made in this bulletin to obtain as complete a list of South Dakota birds as possible. In all, 322 species and subspecies have been recorded. With few exceptions these are represented in the University Museum collections at Vermillion. There is perhaps no State in the Union where bird study is more perplexing than in South Dakota. From east to west the State embraces birds of woods, prairie and mountains. The range of many birds is constantly moving westward, and this causes variation in the migrating routes of many species. The Black Hills, lying only a little apart from the Rocky Mountains, are apt to be visited occasionally by western species. From south to north, likewise, both trees and latitude affect the bird problem. The Missouri River with its wooded banks and ravines, traversing the middle of the State, provides conditions which attract some species farther north than they would otherwise come. But for this fact we probably would not have the beautiful Western Blue Grosbeak within our borders. Birds from farther east and south also, such as Cardinals and Wood Thrushes, follow the growing trees into South Dakota. Many birds are found in the southern part of the State which are never seen in the northern part; and some birds which formerly nested in South Dakota no longer do so. So numerous, therefore, are the changes going on in bird life within the State that observations which were made a few years ago may not be accurate today and observations made today may not be accurate tomorrow.
