Excerpt from Notes on Torpedo Fuzes The cap is attached by means of a wire to the triggers. When the torpedo is struck by a passing vessel, the cap K is knocked off, and in falling pulls out the trigger. The hammer being released, is forced up by the spring and strikes the end of the firing rod, thus exploding the cap. The entire lock should be covered to protect it from rust, and to prevent the accumulation of marine grass and shell-fish. Application. - Apparatus of this form can only be used with buoyant torpedoes. It was used extensively by the Confederates, and with greater effect than any other variety of torpedo. It possesses the merit of simplicity, and would not be likely to get out of order. But it is best to avoid as far as possible the use of springs in torpedoes which are to remain in position any length of time. Clock-work System. - Plate I, Fig. 4, shows the general features of this form of apparatus. It consists of a train of clock-work carrying on the axis to which the main-spring is attached a small wheel graduated as represented, and having a recess cut in its circumference. Fig. 5 shows the details of the exploding mechanism, N is a cylinder containing the hammer B and the spring C; D is the cone-seat, and E the cone of a musket, on which is placed the percussion cap F. G is a lever, the toe of which catches under the collar H on the hammer; I is a small stud in the lever which rests on the circumference of the wheel K, and thus keeps the hammer up. As the wheel K revolves, the recess L is brought under the stud I, which drops into it; thus allowing the arm of the lever G to descend, and releasing the hammer which is forced down on the cap by the spring G. The wheel K can be set at will like an alarm clock, thus securing the action of the hammer at any desired time. Application. - This form of fuze, which is in reality a time-fuze, is used in torpedoes which are intended to be exploded after a given interval of time, e. g., "current or drifting torpedoes." Excerpt from Notes on Torpedoes, Offensive and Defensive The following pages on the subject of submarine mines have been compiled from the various papers which have been drawn up, and experiments which have been made during the last three or four years in the course of instruction carried on at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham. The object in view has been to put the officers and men instructed in possession of a hand-book, to which they may refer should they, at any future time, be called upon to put in practice what they have learned. The course of instruction has now been so far perfected, in conformity with certain principles deduced from practical trial, that the system taught might at any time be adopted for actual service, and as improvements are made, they may, from time to time, be introduced. A great deal of valuable information has been derived from Captain Harding Stewards very interesting "Notes on Submarine Mines," which was perhaps the first practical work ever published on this subject. Lieutenant S. Anderson, R. E., assistant instructor in telegraphy and submarine mining, at Chatham, and Lieutenants O. Chadwick, H. Jekyll, J. T. Bucknill, R. F. Moore, and R. Y. Armstrong, R. E., who have been temporarily attached at various periods to the School of Submarine Mining, have been indefatigable in carrying on numerous experiments, with a view to perfecting our system, and to them a great deal of credit is due. Finally, we have had the benefit of the valuable series of experiments carried on, and of the information collected, by the floating obstruction committee, of which Lieutenant-Colonel Fisher, C. B., R. E., and F. Abel, esq., F. E. S., chemist to the war department, were members. These officers have, moreover, contributed personally much valuable information, of which, in carrying on the experiments of the above-mentioned committee, they had become possessed. Captain W.Dawson, R. N., late secretary to the floating obstruction committee, has very kindly looked over Chapters XIV and XV, on "Clearing Channels of Submarine Mines" and "Locomotive Torpedoes," and Commander F. Harvey, R. N., has been good enough to furnish information for the description of his sea torpedo. Commander Harvey is about to publish a book giving a description of his torpedo, in which any further details concerning it will be found. Excerpt from Lecture on the Whitehead Torpedo For experimental purposes the inventor has at Fiume a wharf running out into the water to a depth of 14 feet. At the end of this wharf is a small receiver, to which a gauge is attached, and from which two flexible tubes are led, one to work the ejector and the other to fill the air chamber of the torpedo; the receiver is connected by a pipe with a large air-compressing pump in a machine shop situ ated at the foot of the wharf, a launching tube somewhat similar to those used on board ship is suspended from the wharf by means of tackles. The inventor has also several boats similar to those shown in Plate III, for manipulating the torpedoes by hand. Excerpt from Torpedo War, and Submarine Explosions N View of the prominent part played in the present World War by torpedoes and submarines, the subject of our extra N 0. 35 is peculiarly timely. The original of 1810 is very scarce, only one copy having been sold at auction in many years: nor are copies to be found in any but a few of our libraries. Fulton's claims for his invention have been fully substantiated and some of his predictions, made more than a century ago, are remarkably interesting, in view of the events of the past five months. His estimate of our population in 1920 has already been exceeded in fact, and only his plan of affix ing torpedoes to their prey by means of harpoons seems - for it was made in the days of wooden ships - fantastic, in these days of iron clads. He could not foresee that almost exactly a century would elapse before his invention would be extensively used though he cautiously says it is impossible to foresee to what de gree torpedoes may be improved and rendered useful. In the J oline collection of autograph letters, sold this month, was an extremely interesting letter of Fulton's, addressed to Gen. William Duane. A part reads. Excerpt from Lecture on Submarine Boats, and Their Application to Torpedo Operations In this lecture I have endeavored give a general history of the science of submarine navigation; giving detailed descriptions [when I have been able to obtain them] of special apparatus designed for the purpose, and a general idea of others where my researches have not been so successful. The greater portion of the information on this subject, which has found its way into print, is vague in the extreme; probably from the fact that it is a subject of very little interest to the general reader and only sought after by the curious, who, in most cases, would pre fer the accounts of marvelous results attained rather than the dry detail of the mechanical devices necessary to obtain them. As re gards the lack of other sources of information, both in times past and present; it may probably be ascribed either to illiteracy on the part of the inventors or a desire of keeping their knowledge to them selves.
