Esta obra se publicó con motivo del centenario de la creación del Protectorado español en Marruecos. A estos efectos, trece profesores de Universidad han reunido sus esfuerzos para ofrecer al lector una trama argumental lo más amplia, objetiva y completa posible del Protectorado que España ejerció en Marruecos desde 1912 hasta 1956, centrándose preferentemente en los aspectos político-administrativos e institucionales más relevantes. No es, por tanto, una Historia definitiva, pero sí una perspectiva metodológica imprescindible. En ese año de 1912 cuando se inicia uno de los episodios de nuestra Historia, que más tópicos ha producido en el imaginarios histórico hispano: el desastre de Annual, el desembarco de Alhucemas, el mundo de los "africanistas", el servicio militar en Marruecos o el Tercio de extranjeros. La visión de esta etapa sólo podría completarse desde una triple perspectiva: la de los españoles peninsulares, la de los marroquíes y la de quienes vivieron y asumieron ese pequeño territorio bajo aquella singular organización política durante casi medio siglo. La función de la Alta Comisaría del Protectorado, la acción protectora a través de la oficina de intervención, el dispensario médico y la escuela, la figura de los interventores, la organización sanitaria, las instituciones educativas y culturales, las instituciones judiciales y el derecho hispano-marroquí, la Administración Militar y los últimos años del Protectorado, son algunos de los temas que se han abordado en esta obra. Por supuesto que aunque la historia del Protectorado no se agota en estas trece visiones, al menos, los trabajos agrupados en esta obra tratan los aspectos más relevantes de la historia del Protectorado. De hecho, este libro formula interrogantes, propone reflexiones y deja la puerta abierta a nuevas interpretaciones. En definitiva, aún queda trabajo para los historiadores en este campo del Protectorado, que no siempre lo fue de batalla.

Referencing maps older than John Snow's famous cholera maps of London in the mid-19th century, this survey pulls from the plague maps of the 1600s, while addressing current issues concerning the ability of GIS technology to track diseases worldwide. Chapter 13 attempts to understand how the hundreds of maps of Ebola revealed not simply disease incidence but the way in which the epidemic itself was perceived. Chapter 14 is about the spatiality of the disease and the means by which different cartographic approaches may affect how infectious outbreaks like ebola can be confronted and contained.
