Excerpt from Noticias Historiales de las Conquistas de Tierra Firme en las Indias Occidentales, Vol. 4: Tercera Parte Después de todo, y a pique la jornadai, se embarcaron en las fustas di chas, trayendo por piiotos a Gines Pinzón y Juan Gómez Cerezo, y se dieron a la vela a los últimos del mismo año de 1532, y con viento próspero, sin mal su ceso, a vista en las Canarias del gra'n picacho J eya, llegaron á la ciudad de San Juan de Puerto Rico, donde se desembarcaron para alentar la gente y hacerse de matalotajes. Los años antes, que fué el de 1526, había capitulado con el Consejo un Sebastian Gavoto, Piloto Mayor del Rey, que armaría con tres navíos y pasando el estrecho de Magallanes, iría en demanda de las islas de los Molucos y de las demás islas sus convecinas, recién descubiertas, con que em barcó y sacó mucha gente noble de España; y entendiendo más de pilo taje que de Capitán, faltóle la disposición y vituallas, por mal repartidas; con que apretado de la necesidad, pasado el cabo de San Agustín y bahía de Todos los Santos, determinó, dejando el viaje de los Molucos, por parecerle imposible, meterse por el río que llamaban de Solís y ahora de la Plata, no porque en él se haya hallado alguna cosa hasta hoy, sino porque muchas leguas arriba de su boca hallaron en poder de ciertos indios algunos planchones d; ella que habian bajado del Cuzco en rescates. Este Capitán Gavoto, después de haber descubierto algunas provincias en este río, tomó la vuelta de España a dar no ticia al Rey de sus facciones; en el cual viaje, ó por varios sucesos que por instantes ofrece el mar, 6 por _querer guiar de intento por allí su rumbo, tocó en la isla y ciudad de Puerto Rico, donde se le quedó alguna de su gente can sada ó disgustada de tan larga peregrinación, pues había sido de tan larg°s años y tan poco provecho. Algunos de éstos halló Pedro de Heredia, y entre ellos a un Francisco César, cuyas obras correspondían con su nombre, bien conocidas de todos los de Gavoto, aunque no le acreditara otra cosa que una hazaña (si no fué temeridad) que hizo en la costa del rio de la Plata, tomando sus riberas arriba con sólo diez compañeros, y trastornando tierras de innume rables y valentisimos indios, no fueron bastantes á retardarles el intento ni a verle dar un paso atrás hasta dar vista a los Andes y tierras del Perú, desde donde volvió á darla por los mismos pasos a sus compañeros que habia dejado en el mismo puesto del Real de la Plata. Conociendo el Gobernador los deseos que mostró de venirse con él, lo hizo su Teniente, de que no quedó Heredia engañado, pues sus valientes hechos desempeñaron las obligaciones en que le puso el Gobernador en esto y con agradables tratamientos y cortesias, como veremos.
