Deux d'entre eux allaient devenir les plus célèbres Corsaires de tous les temps. Arudj, dit Bras d'Argent, était l'aîné. D'abordages en chevauchées, il conquit le royaume d'Alger, mais non sa reine. Convoitises, atrocités et fanatisme constituaient l'insolite univers de ce Louis XI en burnous. Les Espagnols n'eurent de cesse de le poursuivre, et finirent par lui couper la tête, à laquelle ils réservèrent un sort peu ordinaire... Kheir ed-Din lui succède alors. Fort de son étrange armée, il s'approprie la barbarie, l'étreint dans sa poigne de fer, et organise la piraterie à grande échelle. Devant tant de succès, Soliman le Magnifique le nomme grand amiral de sa flotte. Les palais de Constantinople n'atténuent pas longtemps sa soif de domination, et le voilà reparti à l'assaut de la Méditerranée. François Ier tente de le séduire. Il l'invite même à Toulon, pour parer aux menaces de son puissant voisin Charles Quint. Autrement habile que son infortuné frère, Kheir ed-Din se jouera sans cesse des pièges tendus par ses ennemis et s'éteindra, à la veille de ses quatre-vingts ans, dans les bras de sa jeune et très amoureuse épouse espagnole. Telle est la trame de cette fantastique épopée, minutieusement documentée. Jean-Louis Belachemi n'a pas cherché à dissocier l'Histoire de la légende car, dit-il, "en terre d'Islam, l'une sans l'autre n'est bien souvent qu'un moulin sans eau". Il a, surtout, voulu faire revivre, d'une plume aussi généreuse et impitoyable que ses héros, cette turbulente famille du XVIe siècle.
