Depuis la fin des années 1990 de nouvelles formes d’organisation sont mises en place dans le secteur aéronautique au nom de la compétitivité, de la flexibilité et/ou de la rentabilité financière. Notre travail analyse les mutations stratégiques d’Airbus dans ce régime de croissance financiarisé. Nous cherchons à caractériser l’évolution structurelle de sa stratégie industrielle et de sa stratégie d’achat (processus de coévolution). L’avionneur européen opère un recentrage sur son cœur de métier, une externalisation accrue des compétences dites secondaires et une délocalisation des activités à faible valeur ajoutée. Ces mouvements supposent un repositionnement des acteurs dans la filière aéronautique et un glissement de leurs frontières productives. Il s’agit de mutations en matière d’intégration/désintégration verticale, une modification du paradigme productif d’Airbus et une complexification des relations clients/fournisseurs (Architecte intégrateur versus co-traitants et/ou « Risk-Sharing Partners »). A ce titre, les systèmes embarqués, domaine d’activité spécifique, servent d’illustration à notre analyse. Les transformations organisationnelles d’Airbus et de son réseau de sous-traitance sont le plus souvent expliquées par les facteurs historiques, économiques, politiques, industriels et technologiques. Cependant, nous préférons souscrire à la thèse que la financiarisation d’EADS est l’un des déterminants majeurs de ces mutations. Les choix stratégiques de l’avionneur européen sont désormais dictés par des considérations financières. Aussi, le début du 21ème siècle est-il marqué, pour Airbus, par l’émergence d’un nouveau modèle économique moins industriel et plus financiarisé basé sur la maximisation de la valeur actionnariale. Si ce nouveau modèle économique, qui repose sur une convention financière, renferme des avantages à court-terme, il comporte également des risques à moyen/long terme...

This book considers why institutional forms of modern capitalist economies differ internationally, and proposes a typology of capitalism based on the theory of institutional complementarity. Different economic models are not simply characterized by different institutional forms, but also by particular patterns of interaction between complementary institutions which are the core characteristics of these models. Institutions are not just simply devices which would be chosen by 'social engineers' in order to perform a function as efficiently as possible; they are the outcome of a political economy process. Therefore, institutional change should be envisaged not as a move towards a hypothetical 'one best way', but as a result of socio-political compromises. Based on a theory of institutions and comparative capitalism, the book proposes an analysis of the diversity of modern economies - from America to Korea - and identifies five different models: the market-based Anglo-Saxon model; Asian capitalism; the Continental European model; the social democratic economies; and the Mediterranean model. Each of these types of capitalism is characterized by specific institutional complementarities. The question of the stability of the Continental European model of capitalism has been open since the beginning of the 1990s: inferior macroeconomic performance compared to Anglo-Saxon economies, alleged unsustainability of its welfare systems, too rigid markets, etc. The book examines the institutional transformations that have taken place within Continental European economies and analyses the political project behind the attempts at transforming the Continental model. It argues that Continental European economies will most likely stay very different from the market-based economies, and caat political strategies promoting institutional change aiming at convergence with the Anglo-Saxon model are bound to meet considerable opposition.

The international automobile industry has been a focus for much of this debate and this book, written by a team of leading international researchers in the field, uses this industry to examine in detail the actual practice of the transfer and adaptation of productive models and the trajectories of innovation, compromise, and failure that can result. Case studies cover in detail the Japanese transplant experience in North America, and the global experience of hybrid production systems in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. The book contributes to theoretical discussions about the transfer, adaptation, or convergence of productive models. In particular, the authors argue that direct transplantation or imitation of these models is rarely feasible or even desirable. Systems cannot be transferred without being significantly reshaped. Instead, the book focuses on the process of `hybridization', the complex interaction of productive models with national and societal effects. Hybridization, it is argued, is inevitable. But this should be seen not simply as a process of compromise and retreat but also as an important dynamic of innovation and learning.
