A la manière dont on parle de la question sociale, il est légitime de parler de la question du handicap, tant elle comporte d'enjeux fondamentaux pour les individus et la société. La traversée des quarante dernières années le montre en abondance dès lors qu'on ne se contente pas de suivre les événements, qu'ils soient législatifs, institutionnels, médiatiques ou juridiques, à leur seul plan factuel. En analysant la condition des personnes handicapées, et en s'attardant sur certaines affaires qui ont remué l'opinion publique, on rejoint les grands problèmes humains de la souffrance, de la reconnaissance mutuelle, du respect, de la lutte pour la vie épanouie, du droit à la solidarité, de l'expression de la sexualité. En scrutant les batailles théoriques, la notion de handicap se révèle complexe et riche, et finit par devenir un paradigme social général, à discuter. Des horizons nouveaux s'ouvrent grâce aux mouvements des personnes handicapées qui se sont levées pour prendre la parole en leur nom propre. Le développement des technologies, comme l'influence des instances européennes, invitent à penser des rôles et des statuts inédits. Le parcours proposé, de l'avant 1975 à l'après 2005, deux références législatives importantes, constitue une sorte d'histoire contemporaine anthropologique qui met à jour les métamorphoses, c'est-à-dire les changements d'aspects et de caractères, d'une réalité qui renvoie au défi d'être singulier avec les autres. This book deals with two fundamental issues in the semiotics of the image. The first is the relationship between image and observer: how does one look at an image? To answer this question, this book sets out to transpose the theory of enunciation formulated in linguistics over to the visual field. It also aims to clarify the gains made in contemporary visual semiotics relative to the semiology of Roland Barthes and Emile Benveniste. The second issue addressed is the relation between the forces, forms and materiality of the images. How do different physical mediums (pictorial, photographic and digital) influence visual forms? How does materiality affect the generativity of forms? On the forces within the images, the book addresses the philosophical thought of Gilles Deleuze and René Thom as well as the experiment of Aby Warburg’s Atlas Mnemosyne. The theories discussed in the book are tested on a variety of corpora for analysis, including both paintings and photographs, taken from traditional as well as contemporary sources in a variety of social sectors (arts and sciences). Finally, semiotic methodology is contrasted with the computational analysis of large collections of images (Big Data), such as the “Media Visualization” analyses proposed by Lev Manovich and Cultural Analytics in the field of Computer Science to evaluate the impact of automatic analysis of visual forms on Digital Art History and more generally on the image sciences.
