This final report describes progress made by TIS Incorporated for the period 7/1/91 - 10/1/91 toward the development of novel optical computer architectures and supporting methods for exploiting free-space reconfigurable interconnects. Major findings include: (1) Reconfigurable interconnects can reconfigure slower than the bit rate and still improve performance as long as throughput is maintained after reconfiguration; (2) A fixed control sequence does not preclude the use of runtime conditionals, so that the performance of traditional general purpose computing can be improved; (3) A system that uses reconfigurable interconnects is likely to be larger than a functionally equivalent system that does not use reconfigurable interconnects; (4) A reconfigurable approach is most effective for a small active portion of a computer, and is not needed for an entire computer in order to appreciate a performance gain; (5) A reconfigurable interconnect technology can have a significant impact on interconnection networks used in parallel processors; (6) A fixed control sequence must have some level of repetition in order to be practical; and (7) The dataflow model of computing, which theoretically supports maximum parallelism but suffers performance sacrifices in electronic implementations, may be significantly improved since the architecture can be modified to suit the dataflow graph.

The relentless quest for processing speeds in the range of Teraflops and beyond has accelerated the need for scalable, parallel, High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems. For these systems to be scalable and attain the desirable performance, the interconnection network connecting the processors, must itself be scalable in both size and bandwidth. However, at higher bit rates and longer communication distances, fundamental electrical signaling limitations reduce the inter-processor communication bandwidth while increasing the power dissipation, thereby affecting not only the performance of HPC systems, but also their scalability. In this dissertation, we propose an optical interconnect based architecture for HPC systems called RAPID (Reconfigurable All Photonic Interconnect for Distributed and parallel systems) that maximizes the bandwidth density, optimizes power consumption and enhances scalability using static wavelength allocation. We also present two cost-effective design alternatives of the architecture, a modified version called M-RAPID and an extended version called E-RAPID that minimizes the cost of the interconnect based on the number of transmitters required. In addition, we propose a detailed implementation and integration methodology of RAPID using current complimentary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. In order to develop a flexible interconnection architecture, we provide dynamic system reconfiguration that further reduces the communication bottlenecks and achieves better resource utilization. Reconfigurability is realized by monitoring traffic intensities, and implementing dynamic bandwidth re-allocation (DBR) techniques that adapt to changes in communication patterns. A DBR technique - Lock-Step (LS) that balances the load on each communication channel based on past utilization is also presented. While computer-aided design (CAD) toolshave significantly assisted electronic system simulation, the field of system level opto-electronics modeling has lagged behind due to lack of simulation methodologies and tools. We present the design space of developing OPTISIM, a system level modeling and simulation methodology of optical interconnects for HPC systems. Using OPTISIM, we performed detailed simulation of RAPID architectures and compared it to several electrical HPC interconnects using synthetic traffic patterns. Simulation results indicate that the reconfigured architecture shows 35% increased throughput and 20% reduced network latency as compared to HPC electrical networks.

Advances in optical technologies have made it possible to implement optical interconnections in future massively parallel processing systems. Photons are non-charged particles, and do not naturally interact. Consequently, there are many desirable characteristics of optical interconnects, e.g. high speed (speed of light), increased fanout, high bandwidth, high reliability, longer interconnection lengths, low power requirements, and immunity to EMI with reduced crosstalk. Optics can utilize free-space interconnects as well as guided wave technology, neither of which has the problems of VLSI technology mentioned above. Optical interconnections can be built at various levels, providing chip-to-chip, module-to-module, board-to-board, and node-to-node communications. Massively parallel processing using optical interconnections poses new challenges; new system configurations need to be designed, scheduling and data communication schemes based on new resource metrics need to be investigated, algorithms for a wide variety of applications need to be developed under the novel computation models that optical interconnections permit, and so on. Future computer networks will contain clusters of processors of various sizes that are interconnected over a wide range of distances, from dense local clusters to spatially distributed computer networks. To permit the simultaneous communication amongst many nodes, it will be necessary to develop practical networking technologies that provide multiple access, dynamic reconfigurability, and simultaneous communication through a shared channel. The objectives of this program are to investigate novel optical multiplexing architectures for interconnecting computer networks, and to develop their enabling technologies. To achieve these ends, we will investigate networks that combine wavelength, space, and time division multiplexing in new and different ways. For larger networks, new multiplexing techniques are needed that will use wavelength, space or time more efficiently, either by re-using the available channels or by combining several multiplexing platforms within a single network. These optical multiplexing techniques and their underlying technologies are the focus of the research program.
