First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Wie kaum ein zweiter war Eugen Diederichs (1867-1930) ein Literaturstratege, unermüdlicher Impulsgeber, markanter Buchgestalter, dazu Publizist in allen brennenden Zeitfragen, kurzum ein »feuriger Vermittler" (Thomas Mann). Die Neuentdeckung Hölderlins und der deutschen Romantik sind ihm zu verdanken, dazu eine Neubelebung mittelalterlicher Mystik wie der philosophischen Antike, die erste Übersetzung von Stendhals »Le Rouge et le Noir", die Vermittlung der Werke von Tolstoi, Tschechow, Gorki, der Transfer großer Philosophen wie Kierkegaard und Bergson. Den Deutschen Werkbund gründete er mit, dem legendären Serakreis stand er vor. Als früher Verfechter einer »Weltkultur" machte er die Leser mit chinesischen, indischen und afrikanischen Quellenwerken vertraut; für die italienische Kultur des Cinquecento setzte er sich genau so ein wie für die Saga-Literatur des hohen Nordens. Diederichs mischte auch in politischen Fragen mit, schuf als erster Verleger eine »Politische Bibliothek" und »Staatsbürgerliche Flugschriften". Später engagierte er sich für die Jugend- und Volkstumsbewegung, nach dem Weltkrieg für den deutschen Jungbuchhandel und Erwachsenenbildung. Dass er darüber hinaus Reformen vorantrieb und auf Zeitströmungen seismographisch reagierte, macht sein Wirken auch zeitgeschichtlich sehr interessant. Die Dokumentation ist als Nachschlagewerk angelegt, einschließlich Nachweis der Autoren, Übersetzer, Grafiker und Illustratoren.

Pro Mundo - Pro Domo: The Writings of Alban Berg contains new English translations of the complete writings of the Viennese composer Alban Berg (1885-1935) and extensive commentaries tracing the history of each essay and its connection to musical culture of the early twentieth century. Berg is now recognized as a classic composer of the modern period, best known for his operas Wozzeck and Lulu. Berg, Anton Webern, and their teacher Arnold Schoenberg constitute the "Second Viennese School," which played a major role in the transformation of serious music as it entered the modern period. Berg was an avid and skillful writer. His essays include analytic studies of compositions by Schoenberg, polemics on music and musicians of his day, and lectures and miscellaneous writings on a variety of topics. Throughout his considerable and diverse corpus of writings, Berg alternates between two perspectives: Pro Mundo - Pro Domo, meaning roughly "speaking for all - speaking for myself," commenting at one moment on the general state of culture and the world, and the next moment on his own works. In his early years he also tried his hand at fictional writing, using works by Ibsen and Strindberg as models. Gegenstand dieser kritischen Edition sind ca. 170 erzählerische bzw. essayistische Texte Theodor Fontanes, die als Entwürfe überliefert sind. Etwa 80 Texte werden hier erstmals publiziert. Fontane, dessen Nachlass zu den größten Schriftstellernachlässen des 19. Jahrhunderts gehört, hat außerordentlich viele solcher unvollendeten Texte hinterlassen. Über viele Stoffe und Sujets parallel verfügen zu können, gehörte besonders für den Romancier zur conditio sine qua non seines Schaffensprozesses. Umfangreiche Roman-Manuskripte gehören ebenso dazu wie kurz notierte Gesprächsskizzen oder Figurenentwürfe. Die Edition, herausgegeben im Auftrag des Theodor-Fontane-Archivs, gibt erstmals eine Gesamtübersicht über diese von der Forschung bislang nur punktuell wahrgenommenen Texte.
