The Future of the World is devoted to the intriguing field of study which emerged after World War Two, futurism or futurology. Jenny Andersson explains how futurist scholars and researchers imagined the Cold War and post Cold War world and the tools and methods they would use to influence and change that world. Futurists were a motley crew of Cold War warriors, nuclear scientists, journalists, and peace activists. Some argued it should be a closed sphere of science defined by delimited probabilities. They were challenged by alternative notions of the future as a potentially open realm. Futurism also drew on an eclectic range of repertoires, some of which were deduced from positivist social science, mathematics, and nuclear physics, and some of which sprung from alternative forms of knowledge in science fiction, journalism, or religion. These different forms of prediction laid very different claims to how accurately futures could be known, and what kind of control could be exerted over what was yet to come. The Future of the World carefully examines these different engagements with the future, and inscribes them in the intellectual history of the post war period. Using unexplored archival collections, The Future of the World reconstructs the Cold War networks of futurologists and futurists.

This thesis examines the significance of marketed visions of the future following the Second World War on the American public. Visions, predictions and forecasted depictions of the world of the future, collectively referred to as futurism, highlighted the ways in which "tomorrow" would improve the quality of life for the average American citizen through innovative transportation methods, sustainable urban environments, space exploration, and other technologies to ease the burdens of daily life. This thesis argues how these visions were used as a tool to promote consumerism, maintain nationalism, and by the late 1950s through the 1960s, stimulate interest in the space program. The later was a government sponsored goal that represented the metaphorical strength of the nation and capitalism as an ideology. On July 20, 1969, two American astronauts landed on the surface of the Moon. For the American population, this moment involved a lead up which predated the creation of NASA and President Kennedy's announcement of getting American citizens to the Moon before the Soviets. Businesses, media corporations, government agencies, and artists utilized futurism to encourage Americans in their fiscal support, which would aid in these visions becoming a reality. Marketed futurism began in the 1920s and continued through the Second World War. However, the arrival of the Atomic Age, Red Scare tactics, and fears for the national economy during the Cold War, provided an atmosphere which made these visions a plausible reality for the average American. The overtly positive connotations of futurism are in reaction to the altered perceptions of science and technology following the world's public introduction to nuclear technology. Therefore, the democratization of science in the mid-twentieth century, as well as changes to the public discourse regarding science and technology, provide an important aspect to the contextual equation which explains why futurism was pushed on the public and why Americans were so receptive to it throughout the space age. Nuclear Theory Degree Zero: Essays Against the Nuclear Android investigates the threat conveyed and maintained by the nuclear cycle: mining, research, health, power generation and weaponry. Central to this polyvalent 'report' on the infiltration of our lives and control over them exerted by the industrial-military complex, are critiques of the creation, storage and use of atomic weapons, the exploitation of Australian Aboriginal people and their lands through British atomic testing in the 1950s, and an exposé of a language of denial in the world of nuclear mining/energy/military usages. 'Nuclear' is also parenthetically investigated in its function as extended metaphor and question for poetry and poetics. Key is a consideration of the use of the language of the 'atomic' in cultural spaces, and in 'the arts'. Indigenous land-rights claims in the face of uranium mining, the semantics of waste and of the glib usage by nuclear power companies of the fact of global warming to suit their own corrosive agendas. The triumphalism of scientific and cultural discourse around 'nuclear' and the threats by nuclear fission are by association brought into question. The nuclear cycle throws the whole future of human beings into doubt, and this book seeks to assemble new resources of resistance through creative and critical mediums, including poetry and poetics. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Angelaki.

The eighth volume of the International Yearbook of Futurism Studies is again an open issue and presents in its first section new research into the international impact of Futurism on artists and artistic movements in France, Great Britain, Hungary and Sweden. This is followed by a study that investigates a variety of Futurist inspired developments in architecture, and an essay that demonstrates that the Futurist heritage was far from forgotten after the Second World War. These papers show how a wealth of connections linked Futurism with Archigram, Metabolism, Archizoom and Deconstructivism, as well as the Nuclear Art movement, Spatialism, Environmental Art, Neon Art, Kinetic Art and many other trends of the 1960s and 70s. The second section focuses on Futurism and Science and contains a number of papers that were first presented atthe fifth bi-annual conference of the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies (EAM), held on 1–3 June 2016 in Rennes.
