Small modular reactors (SMRs) are an advanced, safe type of nuclear reactor technology that are suitable for small and medium sized applications including both power and heat generation. In particular, their use as individual units or in combination to scale-up capacity offer benefits in terms of siting, installation, operation, lifecycle and economics in comparison to the development of larger nuclear plant for centralised electricity power grids. Interest has increased in the research and development of SMRs for both developing countries as well as such additional cogeneration options as industrial/chemical process heat, desalination and district heating, and hydrogen production. This book reviews key issues in their development as well as international R&D in the field. - Gives an overview of small modular reactor technology - Reviews the design characteristics of integral pressurized water reactors and focuses on reactor core and fuel technologies, key reactor system components, instrumentation and control, human-system interfaces and safety - Considers the economics, financing, licensing, construction methods and hybrid energy systems of small modular reactors - Describes SMR development activities worldwide, and concludes with a discussion of how SMR deployment can contribute to the growth of developing countries

Learning From Fukushima written by Peter Van Ness and has been published by ANU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-29 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Learning from Fukushima began as a project to respond in a helpful way to the March 2011 triple disaster (earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown) in north-eastern Japan. It evolved into a collaborative and comprehensive investigation of whether nuclear power was a realistic energy option for East Asia, especially for the 10 member-countries of ASEAN, none of which currently has an operational nuclear power plant. We address all the questions that a country must ask in considering the possibility of nuclear power, including cost of construction, staffing, regulation and liability, decommissioning, disposal of nuclear waste, and the impact on climate change. The authors are physicists, engineers, biologists, a public health physician, and international relations specialists. Each author presents the results of their work.

Future space missions and deep-sea explorations will require small/micro nuclear reactors (kWe~MWe) for power generation. Compared with conventional energy systems such as storage batteries and fossil energy, nuclear reactors are featured higher energy intensity, higher reliability, and longer lifetime. According to the coolant, the candidate small/micro nuclear reactors include the heat pipe cooled reactor, liquid metal cooled reactor, and gas-cooled reactor, most of which are still in the conceptual design stage with numerical studies and experimental research. These emerging reactors have an entirely different core structure and working principle from the existing light water reactors, which has led to an increasing need for updated simulation methods and experimental studies.

Nuclear Renaissance written by William J. Nuttall and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-16 with Science categories.

Nuclear power is low carbon and reliable, but in recent years it has struggled to play a strong role in global plans for electricity generation in the 21st century. Many of those involved with nuclear power and environmental agencies see controlled expansion of nuclear plants as the most environmentally friendly way of meeting growing energy demands. In the UK policy makers must recognise concerns around severe accidents and radioactive wastes and balance these against the risks arising from other energy technologies. In addition, energy policy-makers must ensure that energy supplies remain affordable for all in society. How might new nuclear power stations help meet emerging policy needs? This second edition of Nuclear Renaissance: Technologies and Policies for the Future of Nuclear Power continues to examine the future of nuclear power in the contexts of economics, environmental sustainability, and security of electricity supplies. Fully updated with the latest technologies and concerns, this comprehensive guide illustrates the technical challenges and opportunities facing nuclear power. This semi-technical overview of modern technologies meets the growing interest from scientists, environmentalists, and governments in the potential expansion of nuclear power. Various countries are starting to announce plans for new nuclear plants, either to replace those being decommissioned, to provide additional power or to contribute to the decarbonisation of especially challenging industrial activities. In the 2020s many commentators, once again, point to a renaissance just beginning. Nuclear Renaissance: Technologies and Policies for the Future of Nuclear Power is essential reading for physicists, engineers, policy-makers, researchers, energy analysts and graduate students in energy sciences, engineering and public policy. Key features Fully updated throughout, with new content on topics including the latest developments in fission and fusion energy, the global financial crisis of 2008/2009, and the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear accident. Accessible to readers without a formal education in the area Authored by an authority in the field

The extended papers in this Special Issue cover the topics of smart energy, nuclear systems, and micro energy grids. In “Electrical Loads and Power Systems for the DEMO Nuclear Fusion Project” and “Energy Analysis for the Connection of the Nuclear Reactor DEMO to the European Electrical Grid”, the authors introduce a European DEMO project. In “Comparison and Design of Resonant Network Considering the Characteristics of a Plasma Generator” the authors present a theoretical analysis and experimental study on the resonant network of the power conditioning system (PCS). In “Techno-Economic Evaluation of Interconnected Nuclear-Renewable Micro Hybrid Energy Systems with Combined Heat and Power”, the authors conducted a sensitivity analysis to identify the impact of the different variables on the investigated systems. In “Fault Current Tracing and Identification via Machine Learning Considering Distributed Energy Resources in Distribution Networks”, the authors propose a current tracing method to model the single distribution feeder as several independent parallel connected virtual lines, with the result of tracing the detailed contribution of different current sources to the power line current. From the five extended papers, we observe that the SEGE is actively engaged in smart grid and green energy techniques. We hope that the readers enjoy this Special Issue.
