Es hora de almorzar, y mis tres nietitos empiezan a lloriquear: "¡Abu, tengo hambre!". Como sus padres están trabajando, el abuelo y yo los estamos cuidando... otra vez. Esto significa que estoy gruñona y fastidiada. Por tres décadas, Daniel y yo lidiamos con el cuidado de niños. Ahora, resulta difícil mantenerlos entretenidos, bien alimentados y contentos. Pero ¿podría acaso mi problema ser una falta de gratitud por la dulce presencia de mis nietos y por la gracia del Señor que provee para todos nosotros? Al parecer, he olvidado la enseñanza del apóstol Pablo en 1 Tesalonicenses 5:18: "Dad gracias en todo". Al orar por esta cuestión, Dios me mostró tres maneras de transformar la queja en gratitud. Cambiar la perspectiva. Por ejemplo, cuando millones en el mundo no tienen zapatos, avergonzamos a Dios cuando nos olvidamos de su gracia para suplir nuestras necesidades básicas. Pidámosle que nos permita ver con ojos agradecidos todo lo que nos ha provisto con fidelidad. Decirle "gracias" a Dios. Como David, expresemos a Dios una gratitud específica e infinita. David declaró: "... oh Señor, [...] todas las cosas que están en los cielos y en la tierra son tuyas. [...] alabamos y loamos tu glorioso nombre" (1 Crónicas 29:11, 13). Expresar gratitud a los demás. Hagamos que el agradecer a otros se transforme en un hábito diario. La gratitud hace sonreír a los demás, y a su vez, muestra a Cristo en nosotras y extiende su amor. El mundo necesita de nuestra gratitud porque, a través de ella, se encuentra con Dios. Mis nietitos también lo hicieron. Al disminuir mi queja, también disminuyó su lloriqueo. Y un día, preguntaron si podían darle gracias a Dios antes de almorzar. Juntos, inclinamos la cabeza y dimos las gracias. Y luego, ¡mi alma elevó su voz con gratitud! —Patricia Raybon

These civilian-manned cargo vessels are the backbone of the American war economy and the lifeline enabling Britain and the Soviet Union to survive—but Hitler’s favorite admiral also knows this, and he has set in motion a plan of unprecedented boldness. Germany’s dreaded submarines, or “U-boats,” are going to the United States. The fiery months that followed would pit American servicemen against German U-boat sailors in a desperate struggle that stained East Coast waters with oil and blood. In the crosshairs of this deadly cat-and-mouse game was a stalwart contingent of civilian mariners who crewed the tankers and freighters supplying the war against the Axis Powers. Thousands of them would perish as hundreds of merchant ships were sunk. Every American coastal state became a battlefront in 1942, and the events that transpired off New Jersey illustrate the perils and brutality of this forgotten campaign. The seafloor along the Garden State is today strewn with shipwrecks that bear witness to the innumerable ways to die faced by friend and foe alike only miles from the boardwalk.
