Durante siglos, el ganado que había en los asentamientos españoles del siglo XVI en el Cono Sur de Sudamérica, poco a poco, se fue escapando. En libertad, los animales se multiplicaron hasta convertirse en millones de bovinos y caballos criollos que vagaban libremente por la pampa argentina, esa vasta región con praderas inmensas que desciende desde los Andes hasta el desierto de la Patagonia.En el siglo XVIII, criollos de origen español, indígenas y africanos vagaban por esa región, capturaban el ganado, atrapaban y domaban a los caballos. A estos nómadas de la pampa se les llamaba gauchos, un vocablo derivado de las lenguas quechua y araucano que significa figura huérfana y solitaria. Con tan solo un lazo y unas boleadoras, un gaucho a pie podía capturar a un caballo y derribar a un toro embravecido. El gaucho asistía en primera fila al maravilloso espectáculo de la naturaleza: presenciaba las acometidas de los corceles salvajes, la fuerza de las tormentas y el estruendo del ganado en estampida. Cada noche, bajo el cielo estrellado, vivía tan libre como un pájaro en el cielo.

Enrique Rapela (1911- 1978) fue un creador pionero. Conoció bien a los gauchos y los admiró por sus habilidades, sus costumbres, su lealtad. Fue asesor artístico de películas gauchescas e ilustrador de varias ediciones del Martín Fierro, entre otros títulos. Los textos de Conozcamos lo nuestro, originalmente aparecidos en tres fascículos, han sido organizados en capítulos y partes temáticas, conservando su estilo y minuciosidad. Enrique Rapela (1911-1978) was a true pioneer. He knew the gauchos well and admired them for their skills, their customs, their loyalty. He was an autodidact who represented with words and drawings that world, as facinating as unknown to many. He was one of the creators of the gaucho cartoon, with memorable characters such as Cirilo el Audaz, Cirilo el Argentino, El Huinca and Fabián Leyes. He was an artistic advisor to gaucho films, and he illustrated several editions of Martín Fierro, among other titles. The texts of The Gaucho's Heritage originally appeared in three fascicles and have been organized into chapters and thematic parts, preserving their style and care for details. Together with the masterful illustrations, they make up a unique and must-have work that Editorial El Ateneo proudly presents. Spanish-English edition.

This book explores the discourse pragmatics of reportive evidentiality in Macedonian, Japanese and English through an empirical study of evidential strategies in narrative retelling. The patterns of evidential use (and non-use) found in these languages are attributed to contextual, cultural and grammatical factors that motivate the adoption of an 'epistemological stance' - a concept that owes much to recent trends in Cognitive Linguistics. The patterns of evidential strategies found in the three languages provide a fine illustration of the balancing act between speakers' expressions of their own subjectivity, their motivations to tell a coherent and exciting story, and their motivations to be faithful retellers of someone elses' story. These pressures are further complicated by the grammatical and pragmatic conventions that are particular to each language. Evidentiality and Epistemological Stance: narrative retelling will appeal to those interested in evidentiality, grammar and pragmatics, cross-linguistics discourse analysis, linguistic subjectivity and narrative.
