La Academia Nacional de la Historia -sucesora de la Junta de Historia y Numismatica Americana que fundaron en 1893 Bartolome Mitre y otros destacados estudiosos-, decidida a emprender en los anos finales del siglo XX un amplio esfuerzo de renovacion historiografica que continuase los realizados en la Historia de la Nacion Argentina (14 volumenes publicados entre 1936 y 1950) y en la Historia Argentina Contemporanea (7 volumenes, entre 1965 y 1967), dispuso en 1997 editar una obra organica y colectiva, de alta divulgacion: la Nueva Historia de la Nacion Argentina. Una comision de academicos, encabezada por el presidente de la entidad, elaboro el plan general que abarca, en diez tomos, el proceso historico desde los tiempos prehispanicos hasta nuestros dias.En ellos tienen cabida relevantes especialistas, procedentes de distintos ambitos y corrientes historiograficas, con el proposito de realizar una obra integral, no solo en el sentido tematico sino tambien con la idea de alcanzar un conjunto coherente que supere la simple reunion de monografias sobre diversas areas. En cada parte se estudian el territorio y la poblacion, la dinamica de las sociedades, las instituciones, la economia, la vida cotidiana y la cultura en sus mas diversas vertientes. Un tomo final, de gran valor instrumental y didactico, contendra los indices generales.Con el prestigio que le otorga su trayectoria de institucion senera en su disciplina, la Academia ofrece al lector este nuevo y notable aporte que se diferencia de los dos anteriores por los enfoques y aspectos que sugiere el actual movimiento historiografico, circunstancia que, sin embargo, no les resta vigencia como referentes en cuestiones que no se tratanaqui desde la misma optica.

Pervasive myths of European domination and indigenous submission in the Americas receive an overdue corrective in this far-reaching revisionary work. Despite initial upheavals caused by the European intrusion, Native people often thrived after contact, preserving their sovereignty, territory, and culture and shaping indigenous borderlands across the hemisphere. Borderlands, in this context, are spaces where diverse populations interact, cross-cultural exchanges are frequent and consequential, and no polity or community holds dominion. Within the indigenous borderlands of the Americas, as this volume shows, Native peoples exercised considerable power, often retaining control of the land, and remaining paramount agents of historical transformation after the European incursion. Conversely, European conquest and colonialism were typically slow and incomplete, as the newcomers struggled to assert their authority and implement policies designed to subjugate Native societies and change their beliefs and practices. Indigenous Borderlands covers a wide chronological and geographical span, from the sixteenth-century U.S. South to twentieth-century Bolivia, and gathers leading scholars from the United States and Latin America. Drawing on previously untapped or underutilized primary sources, the original essays in this volume document the resilience and relative success of indigenous communities commonly and wrongly thought to have been subordinated by colonial forces, or even vanished, as well as the persistence of indigenous borderlands within territories claimed by people of European descent. Indeed, numerous indigenous groups remain culturally distinct and politically autonomous. Hemispheric in its scope, unique in its approach, this work significantly recasts our understanding of the important roles played by Native agents in constructing indigenous borderlands in the era of European imperialism. In this comparative-historical analysis of Spanish America, Mahoney offers a new theory of colonialism and postcolonial development. He explores why certain kinds of societies are subject to certain kinds of colonialism and why these forms of colonialism give rise to countries with differing levels of economic prosperity and social well-being. Mahoney contends that differences in the extent of colonialism are best explained by the potentially evolving fit between the institutions of the colonizing nation and those of the colonized society.
