That nuclear medicine has advanced so far and so fast is due in no small measure to GEORGE VON HEVESY. His work on radioactive indicator technique laid the foundation on which this young branch of medicine was able to develop in the decade which followed World War II. In the intervening years the second generation has grown up in nuclear medicine. Some of them were still exposed to VON HEVESY'S influence, for instance, his address to the 1957 meeting of the Italian Society of Nuclear Medicine in Turin, or his Marie Curie Memorial Lecture at the Pittsburg meeting of the North American Society of Nuclear Medicine in 1961. Others again will remember that he helped to found the European Society of Nuclear Medicine in 1962-1963 and became its honorary president. It was VON HEVESY who, together with HEILMEYER, insisted that this be a completely open society, having neither national nor geographical attributes, its Europeanness being reflected in the variety of languages spoken at its congresses. Its members exhibited a similar variety, including in addition to those medically qualified -specialists in internal medicine, radiologists and laboratory research workers-physicists, chemists and engineers. A group of young second-generation scientists from eleven countries have dedicated these papers to the memory of the great pioneer of nuclear medicine. This book contains new results reported by doctors, physicists, chemists and computer specialists-results so far-ranging as to push the frontiers of nuclear medicine still further forward.

Es sollte fUr die diagnostischen und therapeutischen MaBnahmen nicht nur eine zeitliche Dar­ stellung der methodischen und klinischen Fortschritte beinhalten, sondern auch lang­ zeitlich eingefUhrte und fUr die Klinik und Praxis standardisierte Verfahren und ihre Ergebnisse darstellen. So war es notig, wahrend des Entstehens dieses Handbuch­ bandes einzelne Kapitel schon wieder zu tiberarbeiten. Die nuklearmedizinische Herz­ und Kreislaufdiagnostik, die Moglichkeiten der Anwendung von Radiodiagnostika in der Onkologie, sowie die Fortschritte auf dem Sektor der "single photon" Emissions­ Computer-Tomographie und der Positronen-Tomographie werden auch aus diesem Grunde noch nicht aufgenommen, sondern sind fUr einen weiteren Erganzungsband in Bearbeitung. DargesteHt werden Entwicklung, Standardisierung und Effektivitat der Verfahren, die als fUr die Klinik eingefUhrt gelten. Die Darstellung ist nach Organen bzw. Organ­ systemen sowie nach Spezialgebieten aufgegliedert. Es ist gelungen, fUr die einzelnen Kapitel entsprechend international anerkannte Mitarbeiter zu gewinnen. Offensichtlich ist die Wandlung der Nuklearmedizin von der zunachst getrennt durch­ gefUhrten Lokalisations- und Funktionsdiagnostik durch eine zweite Phase ihrer Ent­ wicklung, deren Basis die Stoffwechselfunktion und die Pathophysiologie ist. Ermoglicht wurde dies durch die Geratetechnik und die standigen Neuentwicklungen auf dem Sektor der Radiopharmazeutika (siehe Bd. XVII dieses Handbuches). "Functional imaging" ist das Schlagwort. Hier werden bestimmte Stoffwechselfunktionen nach Applikation radioaktiver Stoffe in den einzelnen Organregionen lokalisiert als Bild dargestellt. Auch die Knochenszintigraphie ist im Grunde genommen nichts anderes.

The introduction of nuclear medicine into oncology dates back to the early 1 940s, when Lawrence reported on the tumor retention of 32P-phosphate, von Hevesy and von Euler soon afterwards published their fundamental work on the metabolism of phosphorus in sarcoma cells, and when almost at the same time Keston and his coworkers de scribed their observation of the accumulation of radioactive iodine in metastases of a thyroid carcinoma. Since that time innumerable publi cations have appeared in oncologic literature which deal with the application of nuclear medical methods in experimental cancer re search and also in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors. The significance of some originally very successfully applied clinical methods naturally has changed over the years. For instance, scin tigraphy became somewhat less important for the purely morpho logic assessment of certain tumors after the introduction of transmis sion computerized tomography and modem sonographic methods into clinical practice. On the other hand, however, it has also been possible to further develop scintigraphy to a decisive extent, both 'with refer ence to the test substances applied and in view of the instrumentation. As far as the scintigraphic equipment is concerned, the introduction of static and sequential digital imaging by means of scintillation camera computer systems in the mid-1960s represents important progress, as does the recent development of emission computerized tomography with single photon and positron emitters.
