Mathematical Visualization aims at an abstract framework for fundamen tal objects appearing in visualization and at the application of the manifold visualization techniques to problems in geometry, topology and numerical mathematics. The articles in this volume report on new research results in this field, on the development of software and educational material and on mathematical applications. The book grew out of the third international workshop "Visualization and Mathematics", which was held from May 22-25, 2002 in Berlin (Germany). The workshop was funded by the DFG-Sonderforschungsbereich 288 "Dif ferential Geometry and Quantum Physics" at Technische Universitat Berlin and supported by the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and the DFG research cen ter "Mathematics for Key Technologies" (FZT 86) in Berlin. Five keynote lectures, eight invited presentations and several contributed talks created a stimulating atmosphere with many scientific discussions. The themes of this book cover important recent developments in the fol lowing fields: - Geometry and Combinatorics of Meshes - Discrete Vector Fields and Topology - Geometric Modelling - Image Based Visualization - Software Environments and Applications - Education and Communication We hope that the research articles of this book will stimulate the readers' own work and will further strenghten the development of the field of Mathe matical Visualization. VI Preface We appreciate the thorough work of the authors and reviewers on each of the individual articles, and we thank you all.

Comets III brings a comprehensive update to the latest breakthroughs in comet science over the last twenty years and showcases how recent space missions and advancements in telescopic observations have revolutionized our understanding of these celestial bodies. With the contributions of more than eighty authors spanning twenty-five chapters, Comets III investigates the early solar system origins of comets and the clues provided by the composition and distribution of their present population for their long-term dynamical evolution and interrelations with other members of the solar system. Organized thematically, each section is designed to enable connections across disciplinary boundaries in both planetary science and planetary formation astrophysics. This comprehensive volume explores recent advancements in space missions, telescopic observations, and robotic surveys, providing new understandings of the origins and dynamics of comets. Intended for both researchers and students, Comets III offers insights into unresolved questions and sets the stage for future advancements.

The practical importance of turbulence led the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering to launch an Initiative on Turbulence, the most important outcome of which was the definition and agreement of the 1999 Newton Institute Research Programme on Turbulence. The main aim of the- month programme, held at the institute in Cambridge, was to bring together the mathematics and engineering communities involved in the turbulence area to address the many problems and to map out future strategy. As a part of the Research Programme, a Symposium on Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation was jointly organised with ERCOFfAC through their Large-Eddy Simulation Interest Group and took place in May 1999. Two previous ERCOFf AC Workshops had already taken place on these closely related varieties of turbulence simulation, at The University of Surrey in 1994 and at Universite Joseph Fourier, Grenoble in 1996. The Symposium at Cambridge was therefore the third in the ERCOFTAC series, enhanced by the presence of leading figures in the field from Europe and the USA who were resident at INI for that period of the Research Programme. Professors M. Germano, A. Leonard, J. Jimenez, R. Kerr and S. Sarkar gave the invited lectures, text versions of which will be found in this volume. As occurred at the previous two ERCOFT AC workshops, there were almost one hundred participants mostly from Europe but including some from Japan and the USA, including on this occasion resident scientists of the INI Research Programme.

Low Head Hydropower For Local Energy Solutions written by Pradeep Narrain and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-14 with Science categories.
The role of small hydropower is becoming increasingly important on a global level. Increasing energy demand and environmental awareness has further triggered research and development into sustainable low-cost technologies. In developing countries, particularly in rural areas, the possibility of local power generation could considerably improve living conditions. With this in mind, the development of a next generation low-head hydropower machines was subject of investigation in the EU-project HYLOW. Being part of the research lines of that project, this thesis presents a numerical modelling approach to improve the design of machines like water wheels for increased hydraulic efficiency. Nowadays, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) enables numerical models to be quite accurate and incorporate physical complexities like free surfaces and rotating machines. The results of the CFD simulations carried out in this research show that a change in blade geometry can result in higher torque levels, thereby increasing performance. Numerical simulations also enabled to determine the optimal wheel-width to channel-width ratio and further improve performance by modifying the channel bed conditions upstream and downstream of the water wheel. With a power rating in the low kilowatt range, low-head hydropower machines like optimised water wheels seem to have a clear potential for small-scale energy generation, thereby contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by providing local energy solutions.

Numerical Models Of Oceans And Oceanic Processes written by Lakshmi H. Kantha and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-08-08 with Science categories.
Oceans play a pivotal role in our weather and climate. Ocean-borne commerce is vital to our increasingly close-knit global community. Yet we do not fully understand the intricate details of how they function, how they interact with the atmosphere, and what the limits are to their biological productivity and their tolerance to wastes. While satellites are helping us to fill in the gaps, numerical ocean models are playing an important role in increasing our ability to comprehend oceanic processes, monitor the current state of the oceans, and to a limited extent, even predict their future state.Numerical Models of Oceans and Oceanic Processes is a survey of the current state of knowledge in this field. It brings together a discussion of salient oceanic dynamics and processes, numerical solution methods, and ocean models to provide a comprehensive treatment of the topic. Starting with elementary concepts in ocean dynamics, it deals with equatorial, mid-latitude, high latitude, and coastal dynamics from the perspective of a modeler. A comprehensive and up-to-date chapter on tides is also included. This is followed by a discussion of different kinds of numerical ocean models and the pre- and post-processing requirements and techniques. Air-sea and ice-ocean coupled models are described, as well as data assimilation and nowcast/forecasts. Comprehensive appendices on wavelet transforms and empirical orthogonal functions are also included. This comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the field should be of interest to oceanographers, atmospheric scientists, and climatologists. While some prior knowledge of oceans and numerical modeling is helpful, the book includes an overview of enough elementary material so that along with its companion volume, Small Scale Processes in Geophysical Flows, it should be useful to both students new to the field and practicing professionals.* Comprehensive and up-to-date review* Useful for a two-semester (or one-semester on selected topics) graduate level course* Valuable reference on the topic* Essential for a better understanding of weather and climate
