The characteristic vortex formation in the ventricles is believed to be affected at an early stage of heart diseases. First, post-processing of patient-specific data has to be standardised. The chosen methods, a combination of Eulerian and Lagrangian techniques, are characterised by means of necessary spatial and temporal resolutions. Second, the goal is to find the best cost-benefit approach for modelling of the mitral valve, as it affects vortex formation and progression in the left ventricle. The book comprises contributions by some of the most respected scientists in the field of mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of the human cardiocirculatory system. The contributions cover a wide range of topics, from the preprocessing of clinical data to the development of mathematical equations, their numerical solution, and both in-vivo and in-vitro validation. They discuss the flow in the systemic arterial tree and the complex electro-fluid-mechanical coupling in the human heart. Many examples of patient-specific simulations are presented. This book is addressed to all scientists interested in the mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of the human cardiocirculatory system.

This book discusses geometric and mathematical models that can be used to study fluid and structural mechanics in the cardiovascular system. Where traditional research methodologies in the human cardiovascular system are challenging due to its invasive nature, several recent advances in medical imaging and computational fluid and solid mechanics modelling now provide new and exciting research opportunities. This emerging field of study is multi-disciplinary, involving numerical methods, computational science, fluid and structural mechanics, and biomedical engineering. Certainly any new student or researcher in this field may feel overwhelmed by the wide range of disciplines that need to be understood. This unique book is one of the first to bring together knowledge from multiple disciplines, providing a starting point to each of the individual disciplines involved, attempting to ease the steep learning curve. This book presents elementary knowledge on the physiology of the cardiovascular system; basic knowledge and techniques on reconstructing geometric models from medical imaging; mathematics that describe fluid and structural mechanics, and corresponding numerical/computational methods to solve its equations and problems. Many practical examples and case studies are presented to reinforce best practice guidelines for setting high quality computational models and simulations. These examples contain a large number of images for visualization, to explain cardiovascular physiological functions and disease. The reader is then exposed to some of the latest research activities through a summary of breakthrough research models, findings, and techniques. The book’s approach is aimed at students and researchers entering this field from engineering, applied mathematics, biotechnology or medicine, wishing to engage in this emerging and exciting field of computational hemodynamics modelling.

According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, 27.1 million non-institutionalized adults were diagnosed with heart disease in 2010. The number of deaths associated with heart disease in 2009 was reported to be 599,413, claiming the lives of 195 out of every 100,000 people, which makes heart disease the number one killer in the U.S. Even though mechanical heart valves (MHVs) have proven to save lives in many of these cases, they are still not perfect, and complications arising from their design have reduced their application. To better understand the important factors and pursue remedies, numerous experimental investigations have been conducted; however, despite impressive improvements, small-scale studies suffer from lower levels of accuracy and sometimes are very costly to conduct. As in many other areas of research, numerical simulations can be helpful in reducing costs and supplementing such experimental work. The computational effort in this thesis focused on the numerical analysis of current tilting-disk MHVs. In this work, an implicit fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulation of the Bjork-Shiley design was carried out using in-house codes implemented in the commercial code software FLUENT. In-house codes in the form of journal files, schemes, and user-defined functions (UDFs) were integrated to automate the inner iterations and enable communication between the fluid and the moving disk at the interfaces. Based on the investigation of the current simulations, a new design aiming at improving the hemodynamic performance is suggested. The hemodynamics of flow in current tilting-disk valves was compared with the suggested design, and it is concluded that the suggested design has a better hemodynamic performance in terms of shear stress values and residence times.

The Finite Volume Method In Computational Fluid Dynamics written by F. Moukalled and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-13 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This textbook explores both the theoretical foundation of the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and its applications in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Readers will discover a thorough explanation of the FVM numerics and algorithms used for the simulation of incompressible and compressible fluid flows, along with a detailed examination of the components needed for the development of a collocated unstructured pressure-based CFD solver. Two particular CFD codes are explored. The first is uFVM, a three-dimensional unstructured pressure-based finite volume academic CFD code, implemented within Matlab. The second is OpenFOAM®, an open source framework used in the development of a range of CFD programs for the simulation of industrial scale flow problems. With over 220 figures, numerous examples and more than one hundred exercise on FVM numerics, programming, and applications, this textbook is suitable for use in an introductory course on the FVM, in an advanced course on numerics, and as a reference for CFD programmers and researchers.
