As suggested by the title of this book Numerical Toolbox for Verified Computing, we present an extensive set of sophisticated tools to solve basic numerical problems with a verification of the results. We use the features of the scientific computer language PASCAL-XSC to offer modules that can be combined by the reader to his/her individual needs. Our overriding concern is reliability - the automatic verification of the result a computer returns for a given problem. All algorithms we present are influenced by this central concern. We must point out that there is no relationship between our methods of numerical result verification and the methods of program verification to prove the correctness of an imple~entation for a given algorithm. This book is the first to offer a general discussion on • arithmetic and computational reliability, • analytical mathematics and verification techniques, • algorithms, and • (most importantly) actual implementations in the form of working computer routines. Our task has been to find the right balance among these ingredients for each topic. For some topics, we have placed a little more emphasis on the algorithms. For other topics, where the mathematical prerequisites are universally held, we have tended towards more in-depth discussion of the nature of the computational algorithms, or towards practical questions of implementation. For all topics, we present exam ples, exercises, and numerical results demonstrating the application of the routines presented.

Erarbeitung eines mathematischen Modells des Problems: aus der technischen, ökonomischen oder sonstigen Aufgabenstellung ist ein für die mathematische Behandlung geeignetes Modell zu entwickeln und einer mathematischen Behandlung zugänglich zu machen. Numerische Berechnung der Lösung: es sind geeignete Algorithmen und die erforderlichen Rechenhilfsmittel auszuwählen. Es sind Anforderungen an den numerischen Algorithmus bezüglich Rechenzeit und Rechengenauigkeit zu formulieren, sowie Abschätzungen der zu erwartenden Rechenfehler durchzuführen. Auswertung der erzielten Resultate: Es ist zu entscheiden, ob eine ausreichende Lösung des praktischen Problems erzielt worden ist oder ob eine Verbesserung des mathematischen Modells erfolgen muss.

People have dreamed of machines, which would free them from unpleasant, dull, dirty and dangerous tasks and work for them as servants, for centuries if not millennia. Service robots seem to finally let these dreams come true. But where are all these robots that eventually serve us all day long, day for day? A few service robots have entered the market: domestic and professional cleaning robots, lawnmowers, milking robots, or entertainment robots. Some of these robots look more like toys or gadgets rather than real robots. But where is the rest? This is a question, which is asked not only by customers, but also by service providers, care organizations, politicians, and funding agencies. The answer is not very satisfying. Today’s service robots have their problems operating in everyday environments. This is by far more challenging than operating an industrial robot behind a fence. There is a comprehensive list of technical and scientific problems, which still need to be solved. To advance the state of the art in service robotics towards robots, which are capable of operating in an everyday environment, was the major objective of the DESIRE project (Deutsche Service Robotik Initiative – Germany Service Robotics Initiative) funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under grant no. 01IME01A. This book offers a sample of the results achieved in DESIRE.
