An investigation into transcendental space through the engagement of natural phenomena. The investigation utilizes a site located between the major cities of El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces in southern New Mexico. Site observations were gathered in an analytical exercise which included the construction and habitation of a primitive hut on the site for this purpose. The design proposes a series of insertions into the landscape which act as metaphoric view cameras. These conceptual studies, first studied in cast hydro-cal, were further developed into a final proposal which was rendered as a one-sixteenth inch scale site model. This performative study and presentation model integrated traditional materials fabrication with the use of digital fabrication technology. The thesis concludes that the architect can sacralize a location by gathering sensory impressions that are individual and meaningful to a location, and concretizing those impressions into design solutions---thereby making it a space of contemplation.* *This dissertation is a compound document (contains both a paper copy and a CD as part of the dissertation). The CD requires the following system requirements: QuickTime.

Symbolic Space written by Richard A. Etlin and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-12-15 with Architecture categories.

Richard A. Etlin demonstrates how the conceptual basis of the modern house and the physical layout of the modern city emerged from debates among theoretically innovative French architects of the eighteenth century. Examining a broad range of topics from architecture and urbanism to gardening and funerary monuments, he reconsiders eighteenth-century French architecture with regard to the ways in which it was informed by symbolic space. This book provides an accessible introduction to a century of architecture that transformed the classical forms of the Renaissance and Baroque periods into building types still familiar today.

Understanding the Psychological Soul of Spirituality is a comprehensive exploration of spiritual constructs based on an empirical, evidence-based paradigm for understanding and addressing spirituality. In a field where there is no current consensus on spirituality, this book provides a much-needed psychologically based definition and ontology that assists helping professionals in formulating their professional identities; developing effective and appropriate training models; furthering their understanding of what spirituality is and is not, from a psychological perspective; and more effectively addressing spiritual issues to support clients. The authors provide a review of current issues in the area of spirituality, also called the numinous, and provide perspectives that address these concerns in ways that promote a fully scientific understanding of the construct. Ultimately the book provides a concise definition of the numinous that places it squarely in the social sciences. Chapters outline the clear value of the numinous for psychology and detail its relevance for professionals’ training.

Doctrine written by James Wm. McClendon JR. and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-01 with Religion categories.

Christian doctrine, McClendon tells us, is no laundry list of propositions to be believed, but is rather an essential practice of the church. Doctrines are those shared convictions which the church must teach and live out if it is to be the church. The author rejects the prevailing assumptions stemming from the rationalism of the Enlightenment, and redefines theology as a discipline within the context of particular religious beliefs and practices of concrete believing communities. McClendon ties the reading of Scripture to the community's understanding of itself and its own mission.

Plumbing written by Nadir Lahiji and has been published by Princeton Architectural Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Architecture categories.

One of the fundamental tenets of modernism was its image of hygiene, its ideal of bringing cleanliness and order to the great unwashed, as evident in Adolf Loos's 1898 article, Plumbers. Using Loos as a point of departure, the essays in this collection examine architecture through the multiple meanings inherent in plumbing - from the pipes of modern hygiene, to the plumb line of the right angle, to Marcel Duchamp's Ready-made urinal.
