Il volume affronta un tema finora mai trattato in modo organico: la complessità della presa in cura del poliassuntore di sostanze psicotrope nel momento in cui questi si rivolge ai servizi per le dipendenze, pubblici o privati. I modelli di trattamento ancora oggi prevalenti sono organizzati per monoconsumatori come gli eroi-nomani, i cocainomani o gli alcolisti. Tuttavia, nel panorama attuale, il poliabuso e la polidipendenza riguardano ormai la maggioranza dei casi e non è infrequente che rimandino anche ad una comorbilità psichiatrica. Una risposta piuttosto comune evita una presa in carico "complessiva" occupandosi solo della sostanza predominante e senza approfondire il significato diagnostico dell'assunzione multipla. Essa, però, se colta nella sua interezza, si configura come una sindrome che racchiude problematiche complesse; è quindi fondamentale una sua corretta individuazione, per cogliere la realtà dell'utente, pianificare l'intervento e scegliere gli strumenti terapeutici più idonei. Partendo da queste premesse, il testo evidenzia gli interrogativi ancora aperti che gli operatori incon-trano più frequentemente, con l'intento di sistematizzare al meglio le conoscenze acquisite nella prassi clinica e di strutturare un metodo di valutazione per l'impostazione di un trattamento realmente interdi-sciplinare ed efficace. L'originalità del volume consiste nella proposta di uno specifico modello diagnostico dell'assunzione multipla e nell'individuazione di alcuni strumenti d'intervento, sia individuali sia di gruppo, specifici per la realtà operativa dei servizi e verificati attraverso le ricerche del progetto "Caleidoscopio". Il testo, che si rivolge quindi a psicologi, psicoterapeuti, psichiatri e in generale operatori dell'ambito delle tossico e alcoldipendenze, propone infine nella sua parte conclusiva una riflessione sul tipo di servizio più opportuno per adolescenti e giovani poliabusatori.
