Fin dal titolo, l’opera saggistica più rilevante di Cesare De Michelis evoca la compresenza delle due anime del Novecento, «quell’intima contraddittorietà che non riusciamo a risolvere»: la corsa all’innovazione, da un lato, la resistenza antimoderna della letteratura, dall’altro. Questa ambivalenza è il filo rosso che il grande editore e docente di Letteratura italiana ha seguito per tutta la vita, mostrando come la sostanziale doppiezza del Novecento coinvolga e si specchi nei testi della letteratura, radendo al suolo distinzioni di genere e di stile. Il volume raccoglie scritti frutto di quarant’anni di ricerca, «tutti animati dal medesimo sforzo: penetrare il senso della scrittura e rivelare la relazione che essa intrattiene con l’universo dei valori perduti». I primi quattro saggi disegnano un profilo critico generale, che analizza il romanzo come genere della modernità e culmina nella critica al conformismo degli intellettuali, veri protagonisti del volume. Vi sono poi i ritratti degli scrittori che Cesare De Michelis ha seguito nel corso degli anni e sentito vicini, spesso per prossimità geografica – Stuparich, Berto, Tomizza, Camon, Magris – a cui si aggiungono Tozzi, Pannunzio, Vittorini, Debenedetti, Tamaro, Del Giudice, Lodoli. Un bilancio che pone non poche domande, molte delle quali appaiono profetiche: «Ora che il Novecento è finito, ora che la storia è finita e lo spazio si allarga davvero “globale”, che storie mai riusciremo a narrare che non siano solo testimonianze di un viaggio, diari di un’esistenza, ricostruzioni di quel che, infimi gnomi, siamo riusciti a vedere?». L’edizione del volume è arricchita da un’introduzione e da testi inediti curati da Giuseppe Lupo. Il primo titolo de "I Libri di Cesare De Michelis" una nuova collana Marsilio che nasce per festeggiare i 60 anni dalla fondazione della casa editrice (1961-2021), per celebrare l’opera dell’editore e intellettuale veneziano attraverso i suoi testi, editi e inediti, scelti da autorevoli studiosi italiani. Arricchita dall’originale progetto grafico di Leonardo Sonnoli, ispirato al formato dei volumi di Aldo Manuzio.
