Nuovo Mondo is the coming together of new- and classic-style Italian cooking. It is the story of an older Italian man — a fixture in the food scene for many years — and his young apprentice, coming together to explore the Italian food scene past and present. In 120 recipes, they explore dishes of depth and texture where poaching, steaming and smoking (among more standard techniques) are part of the Italian gastronomic lexicon. The recipes are straightforward, but not dumbed-down — and always have an eye on the importance of flavor, texture and presentation. Recipes include grilled peach, warm buffalo mozzarella and prosciutto, scallops flamed in grappa, 'new age' bolognaise, lobster ravioli, crayfish and kombu broth with crab tortellini, risotto of wild sorrel, and desserts such as honey and mascarpone mousse and chestnut pannacotta.

What were the possibilities of prose as a literary medium in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries? And how did it operate in the literary and social world? The Project of Prose in Early Modern Europe and the New World brings together ten essays by leading scholars of the literatures of England, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and the colonial Americas, to answer these questions in wide-ranging ways. Several of the essays shed light on landmark prose works of the period; some discuss what lesser-known writings reveal about the medium; others move between the literary and the non-literary to reflect on the medium's intersections with history, fiction, subjectivity, the state, science and other aspects of social and cultural life. Overall, this 1997 collection will provoke an international reconsideration of the remarkable visibility and diversity of the medium of prose in the early modern period.

Nunzio Pernicone’s biography uses Carlo Tresca’s (1879-1943) storied life?as newspaper editor, labor agitator, anarchist, anti-communist, street fighter, and opponent of fascism?as a springboard to investigate Italian immigrant and radical communities in the United States. From his work on behalf of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), the Sacco and Vanzetti Defense Committee, and his assassination on the streets of New York City, Tresca’s passion left a permanent mark on the American map. This edition, both revised and expanded, provides new insight into the American labor movement and a unique perspective on the immigrant experience.

Italian Immigrant Radical Culture written by Marcella Bencivenni and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02 with History categories.

Maligned by modern media and often stereotyped, Italian Americans possess a vibrant, if largely forgotten, radical past. In Italian Immigrant Radical Culture, Marcella Bencivenni delves into the history of the sovversivi, a transnational generation of social rebels, and offers a fascinating portrait of their political struggle as well as their milieu, beliefs, and artistic creativity in the United States. As early as 1882, the sovversivi founded a socialist club in Brooklyn. Radical organizations then multiplied and spread across the country, from large urban cities to smaller industrial mining areas. By 1900, thirty official Italian sections of the Socialist Party along the East Coast and countless independent anarchist and revolutionary circles sprang up throughout the nation. Forming their own alternative press, institutions, and working class organizations, these groups created a vigorous movement and counterculture that constituted a significant part of the American Left until World War II. Italian Immigrant Radical Culture compellingly documents the wide spectrum of this oppositional culture and examines the many cultural and artistic forms it took, from newspapers to literature and poetry to theater and visual art. As the first cultural history of Italian American activism, it provides a richer understanding of the Italian immigrant experience while also deepening historical perceptions of radical politics and culture.
