Are you a man looking to get into nursing and do not know how to? Do you wish to understand just what it takes to become a nurse in a female-dominated field? If so, then you have come to the right place. This book will usher you into the world of being a male nurse and thriving at it! For a better part of the last decade, nursing has been considered a female domain, with men being looked at as anomalies in the field. The view that men cannot make good nurses has thus led to widespread stereotypes of men who get into the field. Men in nursing are generally often viewed with suspicion, with people even questioning their sexual orientation. However, as you will learn in this book, nursing had originally been a field meant for men. During the old periods up until the 19th century, large-scale caregiving was a role that was meant for men. Thus, this already defeats the stereotype that men lack the necessary temperament to get into nursing. Furthermore, men who get into nursing consider it the most fulfilling profession that they could choose and simply want to care for people. So, perhaps you may be wondering... Why is it hard for men to get into nursing? What are some of the challenges male nurses face in the profession? How do female nurses react to and treat their male colleagues? What are male nurses doing to change the negative perception of men in the field? What does the future hold for male nurses? If these and many questions are bothering you, then this is the book that answers them and more, as it covers the ins and outs of becoming a male nurse and how to make the best of it. More comprehensively, this book will teach you: How to introduce young boys to the nursing field Myths that parents and guardians have about men in the nursing field Why the healthcare sector needs more male nurses Why many patients tend to lean towards male nurses What it takes for men to get into and thrive in the nursing field How male nurses can cope with problematic workmates The reasons why male nurses seem to be happier than female nurses ...and much more. Take a moment to imagine just how much better life would be if we allowed people to get into nursing based on their ability on the job and not on gender stereotypes. Think of how it would be for you, or any other men out there, to live their best life doing this job that you love and have a passion for. It would be a big win for everyone! This study deals with men nursing students in a municipal hospital in a midwestern city. The problem with which this study is concerned is "What" accounts for the fact that twenty men have cosen nursing as a career? Among the areas of inquiry were: the background from which they came, time of career decision, self-concept, and intelligence. At various points comparisons were made with two other samples: first, a sample of 32 men pharmacy students currently enrolled at the University, this providing a means of study of men in an occupation regarded traditionally as male, and, second, a sample of 36 women nursing students currently enrolled in the same school of nursing as the men nursing students. All samples were then compared and contrasted for significant differences on comparable information. A variety of background information was gathered via questionnaire and interview schedule. Self-concept was studied by means of the Twenty Statements Test, sometimes referred to as the "Who am I?" Generally, men nursing students has not heard of nursing as male occupation until they left home, and then stumbled upon it in college, the military, or perhaps they were in work related to nursing. Frequently, the men had rejected one or more occupations before choosing nursing. The decision to enter the nursing field would often be followed by a period of uncertainty and worry about how others would evaluate their choice. An important factor, here also was eventual parental approval. More personally, it was found that their intelligence was above average, identification with their future occupation somewhat less than that of the women nursing students, and their self-concept was rather subjective (similarly to the women nursing students, but in contrast to the more objective self characterization of the pharmacy student sample). Also, many men nursing students seemed to have a strong service orientation, a "need" to be needed. Another problem with which this study is concerned is the feeble interest shown by the nursing profession regarding the recruitment of men in nursing. A brief review of the history of nursing shows that men in nursing are not new and that they have proven their ability to function competently as nurses. Why, then, with the acute shortage of nurses nationally, does one see so little interest in recruitment of the man for nursing? Does sex prejudice exist against the man when he enters the nursing occupation which presently contains 97% women? This study offers some tentative answers pointing both to the lack of information about, and value for, men nurses in the society at large and to some of the personal characteristics that appear relevant.
