This study is a content analysis that assessed the accuracy of information related to nutrition and exercise and the motivational impact to induce behavior change and compliance in mainstream magazine articles. All articles on nutrition and exercise within the 12 issues from the years 1994 and 2004 of Good Housekeeping, Ebony, and Essence were assessed to determine adherence of information to the food pyramid, exercise pyramid, and the Action-Based Theory of Persuasion (ATP). Chi-square analyses were used to determine significant differences for all variables within magazines by year, between magazines by year, and overall by year. The results indicated that only about 5-10% of all articles published in these mainstream magazines in both 1994 and 2004 related to nutrition or exercise. In addition, health articles within popular magazines may not provide their readers with accurate information depending on the topic. Furthermore, even through there has been an increase in use over time, the results indicate that mainstream magazines are not taking full advantage of persuasive messaging in their articles.
