A imprensa brasileira advertia para a possível reedição de Canudos. Acrescia-se ao fato as divergências de fronteira com a Argentina na fixação dos marcos dos limites territoriais e a disputa internacional entre as ideologias que iriam caracterizar o século XX. Godofredo de Oliveira Neto mergulha o leitor nesses meandros políticos, além de descrever um vasto painel da imigração europeia no Brasil. O bruxo do Contestado já foi matéria de estudo em várias instituições do país, como a Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras, universidades e escolas do ensino médio.
