A ética protestante e o "espírito" do capitalismo, ensaio clássico de Max Weber (1864-1920), foi publicado nos anos de 1904 e 1905, na revista alemã Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft. Uma segunda versão apareceria em 1920, ampliada e revista pelo próprio autor, que adicionou passagens ao ensaio, aprimorou conceitos e formulou outros - como os de desencantamento do mundo e ação racional -, fez ajustes terminológicos e incluiu numerosas notas de rodapé. Esta edição reúne num só texto as duas versões do livro de Weber: o ensaio original de 1904 e os acréscimos de 1920. As passagens da segunda versão são destacadas entre colchetes, permitindo uma nova leitura àqueles que já conhecem o estudo e uma leitura completa aos que têm o primeiro contato com ele. A nova tradução (feita do alemão) promove, assim, a retomada crítica da versão original ao aliá-la à versão definitiva, feita na plena maturidade intelectual e pessoal do autor. O estudo analisa a gênese da cultura capitalista moderna e sua relação com a religiosidade puritana adotada por igrejas e seitas protestantes dos séculos XVI e XVII: a partir de observações estatísticas, Weber constatou que os protestantes de sua época eram, de um modo geral, mais bem-sucedidos nos negócios do que os católicos. Os últimos ajustes ao estudo foram feitos no ano da morte do autor, quando o texto passou a fazer parte dos Ensaios reunidos de sociologia da religião.
