Este livro compreende a luta pela terra como pedagogia de emancipação humana. A análise teórica ancora-se na emancipação humana segundo Marx e vários marxistas. O materialismo histórico-dialético é nossa base teórica e prática. Analisamos a questão cultural na luta pela terra: a ideologia dominante e hegemônica; o sistema do capital e o capitalismo, grandes obstáculos da luta pela terra no chão da noite; uma série de pontos conexos, tais como: posse e/ou propriedade capitalista da terra, a raiz maior?; a aliança do atraso - Estado e oligarquias - e o controle da terra no Brasil; a Igreja e a questão agrária: da solidariedade à politização da luta pela terra; o trabalho 'livre' assalariado e a produção de mais-valia: o tronco da opressão?; a renda da terra e a luta pela terra: quanto mais luta pela terra menos renda e vice-versa; pilares da sociedade brasileira: a grande propriedade territorial e a escravatura (e, posteriormente, o regime de colonato); a ideologia do trabalho como meio para se enriquecer; o cativeiro da terra, condição para se abolir a escravatura negra e meio para ampliar a acumulação de mais-valia; com a força de trabalho dos imigrantes a mais-valia dos capitalistas agrários se reproduz e se amplia; a Lei de Terras: no Brasil, compra; nos Estados Unidos, posse. A luta pela terra integra a luta por democracia, contra o patriarcalismo e o verdeamarelismo; a ideologia dominante, o que (o)corre no mais profundo das relações sociais: fetichismo e coisificação, galhos que circulam o ar do capital; a questão religiosa na luta pela terra sob a perspectiva marxista. A luta pela terra está sendo ou pode se tornar pedagogia de emancipação humana? Buscamos compreender a práxis da CPT e do MST na luta pela terra em contexto de injustiça agrária, mas continua aberta a questão: na luta pela terra, pedagogia de emancipação humana? Finalizamos a tese com uma reflexão sobre a utopia da luta pela terra. Nas considerações finais elencamos as principais descobertas da pesquisa teórica e da pesquisa de campo que tornaram possível a construção deste livro.

Sinopse Ted é filho dos “proprietários” da Idolatrada Igreja dos Inquilinos da 171a Casa do Senhor, acusados de enriquecimento ilícito, sonegação fiscal, charlatanismo e calotes a granel. Chefiada pelo agente Costa, um policial-criminoso, uma quadrilha sequestra Ted, que passa a ser mantido refém na casa da mãe do agente, Zumira, uma senhora rabugenta e supostamente esclerosada. A negociação tem início, mas estranhamente os pais não se mostram dispostos a um acordo. Apesar disto, começam uma campanha de arrecadação, junto aos fiéis, a pretexto de pagar o resgate. Inspirado pela prática familiar, Ted tenta subornar os criminosos, prometendo muito mais vantagens a eles, na terra e no “céu”, acabando por semear a discórdia entre a quadrilha.

Peasant Rebellion in a Slave Society identifies the immediate and remote reasons for the Balaiada revolt in Maranhão, Brazil, analyzing the special characteristics of the region that favored the development of a relatively independent peasantry within and around the cotton, rice, cassava, and cattle estates. The book explores the demography of Maranhão and patterns of land ownership and documents the rapid degradation of the environment by plantation‐based export agriculture. The analysis of various types of coerced and free labor, the oligopolistic structure of the colonial economy, and the key determinants of class and status contextualizes the conflict potential in Maranhão during the first half of the nineteenth century. The “People of Color,” as they called themselves, and enslaved workers from plantations rose against a White and conservative elite, claiming their constitutional rights or their freedom. The central government in Rio de Janeiro had to dispatch considerable amounts of money and troops to defeat the insurrection and subject the province again to imperial rule and enslaved workers and peasants to the plantocracy. This richly illustrated volume will be of interest to students and scholars working on slavery in the Americas and the Atlantic world, as well as Brazilian history.
