"The Collection" is meant as an introduction to and summary of Curran's primary and secondary holdings on Brazil's "Literatura de Cordel" now at the Latin American Library of Tulane University. The book relates the story of how the "cordel" collection was put together including telling of its primary sources, the poets themselves and "cordel" stands or "barracas" in cities or towns that sold the broadsides from the mid - 1960s to 2013. Photos and short biographic entries of the poets, printers and publishers are a big part of the story. The lengthy second part of the book is comprised of the lists of the broadsides themselves (accordng to title by the author's choice, author following when known), xeroxed copies of historic titles, and Curran's library of secondary sources dealing with the collection. The author believes that this book has most everything a prospective researcher or "aficionado" needs to know about the Mark J. Curran Collection of "A Literatura de Cordel."

Este ensaio originou-se de pesquisa iniciada em 1987, sobre o zoomorfismo e a simbólica animal, temática fascinante, com múltiplas possibilidades de investigação e reflexão. Uma delas a atraiu sobremaneira, confessa a autora: o que revelaria um estudo sobre a fábula brasileira? A obra é uma resposta a essa pergunta. O ponto de partida da autora foi o ABC da literatura Ezra Pound, cuja terceira parte é intitulada "Mini-antologia do paideuma poundiano", em que a palavra "paideuma" é definida como "a ordenação do conhecimento de modo que o próximo homem (ou geração) possa achar, o mais rapidamente possível, a parte viva dele e gastar um mínimo tempo com itens obsoletos".Depois de um amplo levantamento do que se pode entender por fábula na literatura mundial, tanto da mais remota humanidade como da atualidade, a autora foi levada à conclusão de que o Brasil é um grande estuário, para o qual convergiram e no qual se mesclaram fábulas de todas as procedências. Nesse estuário, procurou detectar os diferentes tipos de fábula brasileira e acabou por chegar a uma primeira classificação: fábula aprendizagem, fábula didático-moralista, fábula admiração e fábula moderna. Cada uma delas subdividindo-se em outros subtipos, que são estudados com cuidado na sua estrutura e de que se dão muitos exemplos convincentes. Tais divisões e subdivisões visam propiciar um aprofundamento quanto às origens ou natureza de cada forma fabular radicada no Brasil, com especial ênfase à fábula brasileira, que classificamos como "sábia e saborosa", em que prevalece, porém, o gênero fábula admiração. Registra-se, por isso, quando nasce no Brasil ou é recriada por brasileiros a fábula admiração, sem que se desconheça que isto não impede a circulação, entre nós, dos demais tipos de fábula, até mesmo da fábula didático-moralista, que por sua vez subdivide-se em quatro tipos.
