Based on exhaustive research conducted in nearly twenty archives in five countries, as well as on oral histories with surviving politicians from the period, this book tells the surprising story of how the alternatingly self-interested and heroic resistance of the political class contributed decisively to Brazil's democratization. As they gradually turned against military rule, politicians began to embrace a political role for the masses that most of them would never have accepted in 1964, thus setting the stage for the breathtaking expansion of democracy that Brazil enjoyed over the next three decades.

No âmbito da historiografia brasileira sobre a ditadura implantada no País de 1964 a 1985, o trabalho de Thiago Nunes, intitulado Gritam os muros: pichações e ditadura civil-militar no Brasil, recria um cenário pouco discutido, que diz respeito às pichações como expressão de resistência. A obra, fruto de acurada pesquisa em acervos como o Dops-PE (1935-1992), traz um contributo à compreensão da história de Pernambuco, ao contar como atuou a militância nos anos de chumbo, tendo nas pichações um canal de mobilização e arregimentação política, fazendo uma importante releitura ao destacar o papel da esquerda jovem e sonhadora da década de 1970-80. Mostra o papel das pichações como importante canal de expressão, denúncia e divulgação das variadas agendas de combate ao regime ditatorial, sobretudo, nos momentos de recrudescimento do regime, criando uma narrativa rica, repleta de informações que mostram os bastidores de uma luta permanente em busca do sonho de viver uma democracia no País, do direito ao voto e de escolher livremente os seus representantes, destacando as campanhas políticas para governador e pelas Diretas Já, sendo, portanto, um belo convite à reflexão em uma perspectiva em que passado, presente e futuro se imbricam.
