Este trabalho tem como objetivo discutir a integração social do deficiente mental, enquanto um processo que se inicia na/pela família e não exclusivamente na escola. Destaca a mãe, dentre os outros membros da família, por considera-la a mediadora e o instrumento mais presente no processo de desenvolvimento psico-social do filho. A técnica de trabalho utilizada foi a entrevista semi-estruturada, à qual foram submetidas 12 (doze) mães de crianças diagnosticadas como deficientes mentais, alunos do Centro de Reabilitação Piracicaba (CRP). As entrevistas foram gravadas e as falas das mães, organizadas em 09 (nove) categorias de análise. Foram levantados, também, dados do prontuário dos respectivos filhos, material constante dos arquivos da instituição. A análise revelou que as mães buscam identificar as causas do problema com base em fatores biológicos. Possuem pouca informação sobre a deficiência, e têm diferentes formas de agir e avaliar o filho. Seu modo de trata-los é influenciado, em parte, pela atividade profissional que exercem e pelas variáveis sexo e idade do filho. Suas expectativas também sofrem as influências dessas variáveis e algumas são correspondidas pelo filho, enquanto que outras não. Há, além disso, certos conflitos na relação pais-profissionais da área os quais merecem maior atenção. Todos esses aspectos estão inter-relacionados e influenciam diretamente no processo de integração social do deficiente. o conjunto das análises permitiu inferir que o processo de integração social do deficiente mental necessita ser repensado, considerando-o como um processo que se inicia na/pela família. Repensar o processo de integração social do deficiente requer um maior grau de conscientização da sociedade em geral, dos profissionais da área e da própria família. Para que isso ocorra, são necessárias mudanças nos cursos de formação dos profissionais da área que atendem direta e indiretamente os deficientes e as respectivas famílias, bem como mudanças nas relações entre profissionais, instituições e pais.
