Riscos sistêmicos estes, inerentes ao capitalismo de livre mercado, que os economistas não foram capazes de compreender quando a crise estourou e até hoje parecem não ter ideia do que são ou do que fazer com eles. "Quando os políticos e economistas especializados parecem tão inconscientes e indiferentes à propensão do capitalismo a crises, quando tão alegremente ignoram os sinais de alerta a seu redor e chamam os anos de volatilidade e turbulência iniciados nos anos 1990 de 'a grande moderação', então o cidadão comum pode ser perdoado por ter tão pouca compreensão em relação ao que o atinge quando eclode uma crise e tão pouca confiança nas explicações dos especialistas que lhe são oferecidas", afirma o autor. Nem sempre, porém, houve essa cegueira generalizada entre os economistas.
