This book provides a detailed analysis of the core concepts of national identity articulated by Iberian writers during the period between 1900 and 1925. It is centered on four "pedagogical" essays written in these decades previous to the onset of authoritarian dictatorships in Spain and Portugal, works that are absolutely central to understanding the discursive architecture of collective identity in these same places today. They are as follows: Enric Prat de la Riba's La Nacionalitat Catalana (1906), Teixeira de Pascoaes' Arte de Ser Português (1915),Vicente Risco's Teoría do Nacionalismo Galego (1920), and José Ortega y Gasset's España invertebrada (1921). The study consists of a discussion of some of the more important theoretical issues connected to social articulation of cultural identities, four chapter-long analyses of the textual manifestations of national identity within the major Romance-language communities of the Iberian peninsula, and a conclusion which underscores the key function played by these public intellectuals in establishing the parameters of the “Imagined Communities” with which they felt primarily identified. On the most basic level, the study of these “catechistic” visions of national individuality provides a heightened sense of both the differences and commonalities inherent in the cultural traditions of these core nationality groups of the Iberian Peninsula. On another level, the study reminds us of the important pedagogical function of literature (understood here in the broadest possible sense) in the formation and maintenance of nationality identities then, as well as now.

O Brasil do limiar do século XXI ainda não logrou alcançar a soberania e a prosperidade decorrentes de suas riquezas e recursos. Permanece preso à lógica do grande capital, que já foi mercantil, como no tempo de Tiradentes, e hoje é financeiro e especulativo, a sangrar povos submetidos aos mais trapaceiros mecanismos de um sistema que continua a nos oprimir. Não sendo uma biografia convencional, pois não foi essa a proposta original do autor, não deixa de possuir os ingredientes desse gênero histórico, hoje, reabilitado pela História Política que se inovou ao longo das últimas décadas. E não poderia ser diferente a quem se propõe a tratar dos eventos da Conjuração Mineira. Esta Inconfidência, para os contemporâneos identificados com os poderes coloniais, acabou gravitando em torno de um nome, usado para justificar os rigores da repressão então desencadeada e, com isso, criar as condições para inibir outras eventuais tentativas de rebelião contra as Cortes portuguesas e seus representantes na Colônia. Do questionamento das explicações formais ao exame detido da documentação e das contribuições historiográficas, há de tudo no texto do professor Miguel Aparecido Teodoro. Da imagem do herói construído ideologicamente à indisfarçável identidade com aquele que se sujeitou à ira dos donos do poder para, com isso, reforçar na imaginação coletiva o papel de mártir de uma independência de um longo porvir, o autor navega ao sabor dessas tentações. Tal circunstância longe de tornar seu texto comprometido, possibilita um diálogo profícuo com o leitor interessado. Do conteúdo desse estudo não existem certezas, e as dúvidas transformam-se em indagações necessárias, sem as quais o episódio da Conjuração e a participação de Tiradentes não teriam a importância que todos conferem-nas.
