O presente estudo de cenários prospectivos teve como ponto de partida e motivação as incertezas, preocupações, esperanças e empenho em fortalecer a universidade pública e a produção científica no Brasil. Ao nos perguntarmos qual será a situação das instituições públicas de ensino superior e da pesquisa no Brasil de 2040, o presente estudo não tem pretensão preditiva, isto é, não se pretende asseverar como será de fato o futuro ou traçar as probabilidades de ocorrência de certos eventos. Seu objetivo é, por meio da construção de cenas futuras, trazer ao debate público os caminhos aos quais podem nos direcionar as decisões tomadas no presente. Busca-se, assim, promover uma reflexão coletiva sobre qual direção estamos tomando e aonde desejamos ou precisamos chegar, em termos de ensino superior e pesquisa acadêmico-científica no Brasil. Ao longo da elaboração deste livro, entre 2020 e 2021, partimos de tendências, potencialidades, obstáculos e desafios que podem significar pontos de inflexão para a universidade pública e a ciência no país, como desigualdades no acesso ao ensino superior, dificuldades financeiras e sistemático corte de recursos públicos, incorporação de novas tecnologias ao ensino e à pesquisa acadêmica, ataques à legitimidade do conhecimento científico, tensionamento das autonomias financeira, administrativa e acadêmico-científica das universidades públicas, evasão de pesquisadores, mercantilização da educação superior, assim como um contexto mais amplo de tensões e acenos de instabilidade política no país e preocupações cada vez mais prementes com problemas ambientais.

Matters related to sustainable development, albeit global in nature, are best handled at the local level. This line of thinking is particularly true to the higher education context, where the design and implementation of sustainability initiatives on campuses can demonstrate how a given university translates the principles of sustainable development into practice, at the institutional level. Yet, there is a paucity of specific events where a dialogue among sustainability academics and practitioners concerned with a) research, projects b) teaching and c) planning and infra-structure leading to campus greening takes place, so as to allow a transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral exchange of ideas and experiences on the issues, matters and problems at hand. It is against this background that this book has been prepared. It is one of the outcomes of the “First Symposium on Sustainability in University Campuses” (SSUC-2017) organised by the University of São Paulo in Brazil, Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), the Research and Transfer Centre “Applications of Life Sciences” of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany), and the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP). This book showcases examples of campus-based research and teaching projects, regenerative campus design, low-carbon and zero carbon buildings, waste prevention, and resilient transport, among others. It also demonstrates the role of campuses as platforms for transformative social learning and research, and explores the means via which university campuses can be made more sustainable. The aims of this publication are as follows: i. to provide universities with an opportunity to obtain information on campus greening and sustainable campus development initiatives from round the world; ii. to document and promote information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of research, teaching and projects on campus greening and design, especially successful initiatives and good practice; iii. to introduce methodological approaches and projects which aim to integrate the topic of sustainable development in campus design and operations. This book entails contributions from researchers and practitioners in the field of campus greening and sustainable development in the widest sense, from business and economics, to arts, administration and environment.

Sequence stratigraphy represents a new paradigm in geology. The principal hypothesis is that stratigraphie successions may be subdivided into discrete sequences bounded by widespread unconformities. There are two parts to this hypothesis. First, it suggests that the driving forces which generate sequences and their bounding unconformities also generate predietable three-dimensional stratigraphies. In re cent years stratigraphie research guided by sequence models has brought about fundamental im provements in our understanding of stratigraphie processes and the controls of basin architecture. Sequence models have provided a powerful framework for mapping and numerieal modeling, enabling the science of stratigraphy to advance with rapid strides. This research has demonstrated the importance of a wide range of processes for the generation of cyclie sequences, including eustasy, tectonics, and orbital forcing of climate change. The main objective of this book is to document the sequence record and to discuss our current state of knowledge about sequence-generating processes.
