Apesar das boas intenções, a presença do príncipe provoca uma série de conflitos que dinamitam aquele círculo social dependente de aparências. Em parte romance de ideias, em parte romance de costumes, que trata do nacionalismo russo e de um contexto sócio-histórico específico, a prosa de Dostoiévski reluz, em especial, ao contrapor o idealismo de Míchkin com o niilismo individualista de Ippolit, um rapaz tuberculoso despreocupado com a ética de suas ações. Este livro oferece a análise severa e complexa que o mestre russo faz de uma sociedade moderna que perdeu seu norte moral — crítica que se mostra relevante até hoje, no capitalismo tardio.
