O contato entre Voynich e os jesuítas foi o padre Joseph Strickland (Joseph Strickland 1864-1915), um religioso jesuíta. Sua Ordem precisava de fundos para restaurar a vila e vendeu a Voynich trinta volumes da biblioteca, que também era composta de uma coleção de volumes do Roman College , transportada para o Mondragone College juntamente com a biblioteca jesuíta geral para salvá-los das expropriações da novaReino da Itália . Entre esses livros, havia também o misterioso, cuja origem é desconhecida. Voynich encontrou, dentro do livro, uma carta de Johannes Marcus Marci ( 1595 - 1667 ), reitor da Universidade de Praga e médico real de Rudolph II da Boêmia , com o qual ele enviou este livro a Roma no amigo polígrafo Athanasius Kircher para decifrá-lo. O próprio Voynich afirmou que os escritos continham pequenas anotações no grego antigo e datavam o volume como originalmente do século XIII . Na carta, com o título Praga , 19 de agosto de 1665 (ou 1666 ), Marci afirmou ter herdado o manuscrito medieval de um amigo seu (que mais tarde se tornou um alquimista desconhecido chamado Georg Baresch )e que seu antigo dono, o imperador Rudolf II , o comprou por 600 ducados (uma figura muito alta), acreditando ser o trabalho de Ruggero Bacone . A propriedade do manuscrito passou de Voynich para o conhecido comerciante e especialista em livros antigos Hans Peter Kraus, que o doou à Universidade de Yale, que o mantém na Biblioteca de Manuscritos Raros e Livros Beinecke , arquivada com o número de inventário MS 408 .

"This collection brings together textual commentaries on thirty representative works of literature in Portuguese - either complete poems or extracts from longer works - ranging from the medieval lyric of the 13th century, through the poetry and drama of the Portuguese Renaissance, the great Realist novels of the nineteenth century, early twentieth century Modernism and post-1974 writings through to the present day, while also including examples of 19th- and 20th- century Brazilian literature. The authors chosen - poets, dramatists and novelists - are generally regarded as iconic writers, and the three most famous canonical Portuguese authors (Luis de Camoes, Fernando Pessoa, Jose Saramago) are featured, but the texts selected for commentary strike a balance between a focus on well-known and lesser-studied works. All the primary texts are reproduced in Portuguese, sometimes in original editions, with English translations added for the majority.
