É precisamente nesta condição de relação social que surge o medo; das estruturas de relações sociais, nas quais os indivíduos se encontram nos percursos da sua vida, emerge e desenvolve se o medo social. O medo social é produto de relações desequilibradas, em qualquer dos campos da acção humana, havendo actores que nos sistemas sociais dele mais beneficiam, e outros que por ele se deixam dominar. A prevalência desta emoção nas estruturas de relações sociais faz se pela manutenção de uma ordem, cujos vigilantes garantem a eficiência da sua actuação, podendo estes revestir as mais diversas expressões, formais e informais, para garantirem a sua eficácia no tecido social. Neste sentido, o medo social emana de diferentes fontes, e não é produto de uma espontaneidade ingénua. Ele resulta de uma intencionalidade, que se pode caracterizar por uma maior ou menor intensidade junto daqueles que constituem o alvo preferido de quem da sua insegurança pode beneficiar. Esta emoção reflecte estados de insegurança que radicam naquilo que de mais profundo existe no ser humano, e quem mais dela fizer uso maior possibilidade terá de controlar a acção dos outros. Como partimos do princípio de que a melhor forma de enfrentar os nossos medos é deles tomar consciência, a leitura deste livro torna se obrigatória para quem se recusa a ser escravo dos que se servem do medo como instrumento de domínio dos outros.

'Globalization' is a word that is currently much in use. This book is an attempt to show that there is far more to globalization than its surface manifestations. Unpacking the social roots and social consequences of globalizing processes, this book disperses some of the mist that surrounds the term. Alongside the emerging planetary dimensions of business, finance, trade and information flow, a 'localizing', space-fixing process is set in motion. What appears as globalization for some, means localization for many others; signalling new freedom for some, globalizing processes appear as uninvited and cruel fate for many others. Freedom to move, a scarce and unequally distributed commodity, quickly becomes the main stratifying factor of our times. Neo-tribal and fundamentalist tendencies are as legitimate offspring of globalization as the widely acclaimed 'hybridization' of top culture - the culture at the globalized top. A particular reason to worry is the progressive breakdown in communication between the increasingly global and extra- territorial elites and ever more 'localized' majority. The bulk of the population, the 'new middle class', bears the brunt of these problems, and suffers uncertainty, anxiety and fear as a result.
